WINE BOOK version: 05062013 N · I · F · O SARRAPOCHIELLO D(cid:182)ERASMO Aglianico del Taburno Reserva DOC Twelve hectares of this small family winery lie at the base of the Pentime Mountain in the foothills of the massive Apennine range, located on Latina Way, an ancient Roman road leading to the town of Benevento, used in those times to supply Rome with grapes and wines. Three generations of the Nifo- Sarrapochiello family have kept the traditional growth of varietals such as Aglianico, Piedirosso, Olivella, Falaghina, Coda di Volpe and Greco. Lorenzo, who holds a doctorate in agriculture, is the third generation winemaker, who today carries on the love and respect of nature handed down from fathers to sons, in a steady link between tradition and scientific and cultural progress. Organic farming without the use of herbicides or pesticides, up to date wine growing techniques, and a willingly limited production are the basic conditions used for the yield of high quality grapes. D(cid:182)Erasmo is a wine that pairs well with all types of roasted and grilled meats, fowl, and strong seasoned cheeses. Complex and elegant, this Barbaresco has lots to reveal as it sits in the glass — concentrated dark berries, violets, tobacco leaves and more. Tannins are delightfully approachable. If you can, open the bottle a little beforehand. - wine tasting note by JN, June 2012 Expert Review 91 Wine Advocate The 2008 Barbaresco Serra flows with sweet rose petals, cherries, spices and minerals. It shows lovely overall balance and harmony especially in the energetic finish. The Serra is already pretty inviting (written October 2011), but it will be better with a little more bottle age. Wine review by Antonio Galloni RACY, COMPLEX & FULL. Scents of spice, tar, & sappy cherries precede full, lush flavors of cherry, tea leaves, tobacco spice & earth, with fine, chalky tannins that linger without dominating. Impressively structured, decanting is recommended. 100% Nebbiolo On the hillsides overlooking Nieve, the major town of Italyʼs Barbaresco appellation, Paitinʼs vineyards occupy over 17 hectares of some of the finest land in the entire Piedmont region. The Elia-Pasqureo family has been working this land since 1796, & has made world-class Barbaresco since 1893. While best known for their Nebbiolo-based wines, Paitin also crafts delightfully pure Dolcetto & Barbera wines, artfully balancing centuries-old traditions & modern winemaking innovations. LUIGI BAUDANA, BAROLO "CERRETTA PIANI" Luigi Baudana and his wife Florina, after their period at the Enoteca Regionale in Grinzane, have decided to devote themselves full-time to the family estate, consisting of four and a half hectares in the Baudana vineyard. Two and a half of these are planted to dolcetto and the rest are divided between nebbiolo, barbera and chardonnay; this is because, until about ten years ago, for a small farm with few commercial outlets, dolcetto was more profitable than other varieties. The upshot is that Luigi’s Dolcetto annually earns a place among the best of the area. The most successful wine this year is the deep ruby hued Dolcetto Sori Baudana; the nose offers fresh, elegant notes of steeped cherry and almond, followed by a warm, soft, dense palate with good tannins and a soft, dry finish. The Barbera Donatella, which shows the effects of a violent hailstorm at an advanced stage of the growth cycle, it does earn two full glass, however. The two good whites are the fresh, yeasty Langhe Chardonnay and the new Langhe Lorenso, a barriqued blend of sauvignon and chardonnay with aromas of tropical fruit and a strong toasty note, good structure and well-judged acidity. Region: Serralunga d’Alba-Piemonte Varietal: 100% Nebbiolo Vintage: 2001 Tasting Notes: Brilliant ruby color, dried rose petal, wild cherry and tar aromas. In the mouth, supple tannins, pure black cherry, leather and anise flavors. Suggestion: Goes well with meet and Aged Cheeses, also very good with dry fruit ( Chestnuts, Almonds) Francesco Rinaldi - Barolo, "Le Brunate" Appellation: Barolo DOCG Type: Red, dry Varietal Blend: 100% Nebbiolo Region: Piemonte Production Area: Barolo, La Morra(Cuneo) Vineyard: The Brunata vineyard is at 1,000 feet above sea level and is exposed to the south - east. Only vineyards in the hills with suitable slopes and orientations are considered suitable for production, and the terrains must be primarily clayey-calcareous in character. 2,000 Hectares Vines: Nebbiolo Michet and Lampia Planting Year: from 1979 to 1981 Planting System: Guyot Soil: Clayey with a mix of blue marl, tuff and sand. This soil is also called Tortonian and it allows for great drainage. Harvest: Middle of October Vineyard Notes: Yield: 3.5 tons per acre Vinification: A prolonged fermentation of 25-30 days in stainless steel tanks and periodic pump-overs. Aging: Three years in large neutral Slavonian oak barrels. It spends Winemaking another year in the bottle. Notes: Total Production: 10.000 bottles Barolo Le Brunate is very similar to the Cannubbio in that it is essentially fruit-forward in its expression of fruit. Here the aromas and flavors are a touch darker as one might expect from the Brunate vineyard. Sweet menthol, spices licorice and minerals linger on a long, refined finish. Tasting Notes: Food Pairings: Red meat dishes and aged cheese. www.vinitywinecompany.com 5950 Doyle Street, Emeryville, CA 94608 t: 510-601-6010
