For those of you that can't even program your VCR's, you'd better 1 catch up quickly. This past summer the Community College Network's interac- tive video cameras and monitors were set up in Southwest's library media room as a link to other community and junior colleges across the state. Its main priority right now is to provide master's degree training for nurses by linking sites with the University Medical Cen- ter in Jackson, but soon, it will allow a wider range of services. Traditions. Last summer, Charlie the Bear,S outhwest's live mascot for the past 22 years, died of natural causes. The board of trustees voted not to purchase another bear, so the Student Govern- ment Association decided to raise mon- ey to purchase a mascot costume to be used at school functions in support of the Bears. Landscaping. Sophomores noticed per- haps more than the Freshmen the abun- dance of new greenery on campus. Southwest's campus was already one of the most beautiful campuses in the state with its own Bear Lake complete with swimming ducks and pine trees shading the buildings, but over $45,000 was spent this past summer and fall semester on new shrubs, trees, and flowers. 2/ Opening Joe Juiteau's class of rotary drillers practiced their skills by drilling several new water wells on campus. Hoes and shovels were common sights as sites were prepared for new trees and shrubs. You soon learn that everyday is a different sched- ule. So you memorize which classes you have on which days and in which building, but when you wake up the next morning with just enough time to get ready for your first class, you find that your suite:mates have already taken over the showers.
