Abstract ScraptiresderivedfromautomobileshavebecomealargeenvironmentalproblemintheUnitedStates. Inthisstudy,researchiscarriedouttoinvestigatethe potentialuseoftire-derivedpyrolyzedcarbonblackfromscraptiresasanasphaltcementmodifier. TheasphaltcementsusedinthisresearchwereAC10andAC20. Penetrationandsofteningpointtestswereperformedtoobtaintheconsistencyoftheasphalt cements. Thepyrolyzedcarbonblack,asprovidedbyWolfIndustries,wascombinedwiththeasphaltcementinthefollowingpercentages: 5%,10%,15%and 20%. Penetration,softeningpointandductilitytestswereperformedtodeterminethetemperaturesusceptibilityofthemodifiedbinderasalteredbythe pyrolyzedcarbonblack. Inorderthattheresultsarecomparabletoprevioustesting,commercialcarbonblackpurchasedfromCABOTIndustrywasalsousedasamodifierinthe tests. Thesametestprocedureswereappliedtotheasphaltcementsmodifiedbycommercialcarbonblack. Thetestresultscontainedinthisreportillustratetheviabilityofthepyrolyzedcarbonblackasanasphaltmodifier. Recommendationsareprovidedtofacilitate furtherresearchonthisparticularproject Apreliminaryassessmentofatestroadusingthepyrolyzedcarbonisappended. 17. Keywords 18.
