UNIVERSITY OF REGINA ARCHIVES AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS DR JOHN ARCHER LIBRARY 85-83 DAVID THAUBERGER PAPERS ON SASKATCHEWAN FOLK ART SHELLEY SWEENEY SEPTEMBER 16, 1986 REVISED MAY 2009 BY ELIZABETH SEITZ 85-83 DAVID THAUBERGER 2 / 28 The David Thauberger archives on Saskatchewan Folk Art comprise nearly a foot of material, including correspondence with folk artists, newspaper clippings, articles, art works, photos and slides. Through a personal interest developed quite early in his own career as an artist, Thauberger spent time gathering art works and information about this little known art form. His exploration paralleled growing interest and appreciation by society for Canadian folk art so that today, in Thauberger's archives, we have a rare opportunity to meet that interest with the resources necessary for any in-depth research to be conducted. In particular, we have a comprehensive collection of 1,300 slides, taken over a ten year period of time, recording the works of some 86 artists. As folk art is generally not expensive, most of these art works have been purchased and are held in private hands throughout Canada. These slides represent then, one of the only in-depth collections to chronicle the grass roots folk movement that has enriched Saskatchewan art and influenced mainstream artists. With the addition of actual art works {including a rare Fred Moulding painting} the researcher has the unique opportunity to actually see samples of Saskatchewan folk art, survey the extent of the movement, compare it to similar Nova Scotian and Quebecois movements {also included in the slide collection} and understand the whole in its historical context. This collection received Cultural Designation from the Federal Government in April of 1986.
