TheUniversityofMaryWashington is accreditedbytheCommission on Collegesofthe SouthernAssociation ofColleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; telephonenumber (404) 679-4501) to awardthe degreesofBachelorofArts, BachelorofScience, BachelorofLiberal Studies, BachelorofProfessional Studies, MasterofScience (in Elementary Education),MasterofEducation, andMasterofBusinessAdministration. THE UNIVERSITY TheUniversityofMaryWashingtonis astate-assisted, coeducational institution composedoftwo colleges. One is apredominantly undergraduate, residentialcollege oftheliberalarts andsciences (MaryWashingtonCollege). Foundedin 1908, ithas evolved from ateacher's college, to abranchoftheUniversityofVirginia, towhat it is today: oneofAmericasoutstandinginstitutionsofliberallearning. The secondis acollege ofgraduateandprofessional studies. Openedin 1999, this nonresidential andprimarilygraduate collegeis designedto supportlifelong learning,professionaladvancement, andregionaleconomic developmentby providingprogramstailoredto the needs ofadultlearners, professionals, and members ofthebusinesscommunity. Throughoutthese changes inthe University's mission and structure, one characteristichasbeenconstant: the commitmentto academic excellence. Theinstitutioncontinuestobe recognizedas one ofthenation'sbestsmall universitiesbysuch authoritativepublications as U.S. Newsand WorldReport, Barron'sProfiles ofAmerican Colleges, TheFiske Guide to Colleges, and The Princeton Review. Severalfactorscontributeto the institution's excellence. Foremost among thesearethe expertiseandcommitmentofthefaculty. Members ofthe faculty areenergeticallyengagedinproductiveresearch andscholarship,whichleadto the advancementoftheirparticulardisciplines. Atthe sametime, however, itis teachingthatistheirprimarygoal andpurpose. Teachingeffectiveness is enhancedbythe small sizeofmostclasses, which encouragespersonalinteractionbetween facultyandstudents. Moreover, facultydevotemuch attentionto students' concernsbeyondthe classroom, workingcloselywiththem onmattersofacademic, career, andpersonal development. Everyinstitution ofhigherlearningaccreditedbythe Southern Association ofColleges andSchoolspossesses abrief, formal statementofinstitutional purpose. This statementdefinesthemissionandroleoftheinstitution. It also provides aclearsenseofoverarchingdirection andabenchmarkagainstwhich institutionaleffectivenessmaybegauged. Theofficialmission statementofthe University, adoptedbyitsgoverningRectorandBoardofVisitorsandapproved bythe State CouncilofHigherEducation forVirginia, is asfollows: UNIVERSITY OF MARY WASHINGTON MISSION STATEMENT The UniversityofMaryWashington is committedtobeingapremierpublic institution ofhighereducation, cultivatingan environmentofacademic excellence, fosteringlifelonglearning, pursuingknowledge, andproviding serviceto its constituentcommunities. The Universityprovidestheframework withinwhich multiplecolleges, schools, andaffiliatedorganizations can accomplishtheirdistinctivepurposes. TheUniversitywillberesponsiveto the changingneeds ofthe studentpopulations andthecommunitiesinwhich — itthrives. Allmembers oftheUniversitycommunity students, faculty, and staff—are expectedtoparticipatein servicetothe institution andencouragedto engageinservicetothelargercommunityandto society. The University'sundergraduate, residentialcollegeofarts and sciences,Mary Washington College onthe Fredericksburgcampus, emphasizesexcellence inliberallearningthroughfreedomofinquiry, personalresponsibility, and intellectual integrity. Instructionalandexperientialprogramsprovide students astronggeneraleducation, anunderstandingoftheirresponsibilities as citizens inthebroader, diverse community, andthe skills necessaryforcreativeand productivelives. To achievethesegoalsthe collegerequires itsundergraduates topursuebroadstudies in thearts, thehumanities, andthesciences as a necessarysupplementto aconcentration in aparticularfield. Thecollege regards theprovision ofhigh-qualityinstruction as its mostimportantfunction. Through an activeandprofessionallyengagedfaculty, the college supports ongoingresearch appropriateto the developmentofstudentabilities and facultyinterests. Itespeciallyencouragestheparticipationofundergraduatesin research. The University's College ofGraduateandProfessionalStudies onthe Stafford campus supportslifelonglearning,professionaladvancement, andregional economic developmentbyprovidingaccessible, qualityeducationtailoredtothe needs ofadultlearners, professionals, andmembersofthebusinesscommunity. The Collegevalues integrity, open-mindedness, andfairness andhasexcellence inteaching as itshighestpriority. The facultyactivelyparticipate inthe applied, intellectual, and scholarlydevelopments oftheiracademic disciplines and emphasizethe integration oftheoryandpracticeintheclassroom. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY The institutionwas foundedin 1908 asthe StateNormalandIndustrial School forWomen in Fredericksburg. The namewas changedin 1924to the State Teachers CollegeatFredericksburg, andagainin 1938 to Mary Washington College, havingtransformedovertheyearstoVirginia'spublic liberal artscollege forwomen. Then in 1944, MaryWashington Collegebecame affiliatedwiththe UniversityofVirginiaasitswomen'sundergraduateartsand sciences division. In 1970the entire Universitybecamecoeducational andin 1972,byactionofthe GeneralAssemblyofVirginia, the Collegebecame an independent, state-supportedinstitutionforwomen andmen,withits own governingboard. On July 1, 2004, the GeneralAssemblynamedtheinstitution UniversityofMaryWashington. The UniversityMission Statement, adoptedon July 17, 2004,bythe RectorandVisitors ofthe UniversityofMaryWashington, identifiesMaryWashington College on the Fredericksburgcampus asthe University's undergraduate, residentialcollege ofarts andsciences. Throughanemphasis on quality, theUniversityattracts students from all areas ofVirginia, particularlytheurban areas ofNorthernVirginia, Richmond, andTidewater. Approximately25 percentofits on-campus resident students arefrom otherstates andforeigncountries,withthelargestpopulation coming from Southern, MiddleAtlantic, andNewEnglandstates. Locatedinthemiddle ofarapidlygrowingWashington-Richmond"urban corridor," TheUniversityof MaryWashington servestheeducationalneeds ofbothfull-time andpart-time, commutingstudents. To meetthe diverse academic goals soughtbystudents intodays society, thecollege ofarts andsciences, MaryWashington College, is organizedinto academic departments ofoneormoredisciplines andoffersmorethan 30 undergraduateprograms intheliberalarts andsciences. Fivedegrees are awardedatthe Fredericksburgcampus: BachelorofArts, BachelorofScience, MasterofScienceinElementaryEducation, BachelorofLiberal Studies, and MasterofArtsin Liberal Studies,whichwillbediscontinued as soon as all students remainingintheprogramhaveeithergraduatedorhaveleftthe program. Emphasis uponexcellence in thepursuit ofliberallearninghas traditionallybeen atthecore ofthe Collegeseducationalphilosophy, and commitmenttothisconceptwillcontinue. In 1999, respondingto acceleratingdemographicchangesthatincreased thedemandforeducationalserviceswithintheregion, the Universityopened the CenterforGraduate andProfessional Studies (latercalledJames Monroe Center), locatedatanewcampus innearbyStafford County. In2004, this becamethe University's CollegeofGraduateand Professional Studies. With its own distinctivemission, this College offersprograms appropriateto the region's economic developmentneedsandprovideseducationalopportunitiesforthe personallifelonglearningandprofessionaladvancement objectivesofthe citizens oftheregion. AstheUniversityevaluates its offerings, itwillbuilduponitshigh-quality liberalarts andsciencesprograms andproposecurricularadditions and adjustments specificallydesignedto meetnewandincreaseddemands. COMMUNITY VALUES Severalelementscontribute significantlyto thefulfillmentoftheUniversity's mission. One isthe encouragementof, andrespectfor, individual andcultural diversity. TheUniversityalso insistsupon anatmosphereofcivilityand tolerance consistentwiththeideals ofacommunityofscholars. Towardthat end, the Universityembraces astatementofcommunityvaluesandexpectations concerningthebehaviorofitsmembers. This statementdeclaresthatthe UniversityofMary Washington isan academiccommunitydedicated to the higheststandards ofscholarship,personalintegrity, responsibleconduct, and respectforthe individual Weholdamongourforemostcommon values: • The importanceofpersonalintegrityas reflectedin adherence to the HonorCode • The rightofevery individual to be treatedwith dignityandrespectat all times • Theacceptanceofandrespectfordiversityin ourcommunityand adherence to the UniversitysStatementofNondiscrimination, and • Thefreedom ofintellectual inquiryin thepursuitoftruth. As members ofthe Universitycommunity, we refuse to tolerate behavior thatin any waycompromisesorthreatens thesevalues. THE HONOR SYSTEM Anotherelementbasicto theUniversity'smissionisadherencetothe Honor System,which constitutes oneofthedistinctivefeatures ofstudentlifeatthe institution. This system,basedupontheintegrityofeach student, providesthat astudent shallacthonorablyinall facets ofcampuslife. The HonorPledge requiredon quizzes, examinations, andothercourseworkmeansthatthe workthatthe student submits isthe studentsown, completedaccordingto requirementsforthecourse asdeterminedbytheinstructor. Lying, cheating, and stealingarespecificinfringements ofthe HonorCode. Inthecaseofan allegedviolation, an HonorhearingisconductedbyanelectedHonorCouncil, withtheverdictdeterminedbyarandomlyselectedjuryofstudents. Incase of aconviction, the studentmayreceivepunishmentrangingfromcommunity serviceto permanent dismissalfrom the University, andthesanctionwill be notedonthe studentspermanentacademictranscript. Allstudents and facultyshouldunderstandthatbyjoiningtheUniversityofMaryWashington communitytheycommitthemselvestolivingbyand upholdingthe Honor System. THE CAMPUSES ThelearningenvironmentofMaryWashington isfurtherenhanced bytheverylocation andphysicalcharacteristics ofthecampus itself.
