This index is intended as an aid to researchers by listing surname, first, and middle names (where given), and the page and line'where that name may be found inthe microfilm record ofthe Census. It includes every member ofthe family, not justHead ofHousehold. The present plans are to complete each ofthe 26 counties ofthe Territory ofNew Mexico and compile that data into a computer database where it will be organized into separate County Indexes. Then, they will be combined into one comprehensive, set ofvolumes indexing the entire Territory ofNew Mexico in the Census of1910. We attempted to use the spelling used by the Enumerators, even when we knew they were misspelled. However, we have also included an additional listing ofthe correct spelling of the Head ofHousehold with a reference to the misspelled listing. Three volunteer Indexers worked separately to decipher each name in this Index using photocopies ofthe microfilm. The First Reader undertook the challenging task ofhandwriting, line by line, his or her understanding ofwhat the Enumerator had written in 1910. The Second Reader either agreed with the assessment ofthe First Reader or offered written alternatives. The Third Reader had the benefit ofthe previous work and could "vote" with either the First or the Second Reader or, in many cases, suggested athird alternative. The Editor made the final determination as to the correct spelling of the name, often against the microfilm. In cases where different spellings seemed possible due to the individual nature ofthe handwriting ofthe Enumerator, the Editor elected to enter more than one variation ofthe name in this Index to aid researchers. In some instances, the Enumerator mistakenly entered the first, middle, and last name instead ofusing the correct procedure oflast, first, and middle. The Editor has entered the name in this Index both ways. ii There are many instances where it appears that the Enumerator could not spell a name and simply drew a straight line instead oftrying to do so. We have attempted to identify these as best we could. The Editor is certain that often the Enumerator did not go to the door - or possibly no one was home and he never went back - and so he filled in the data by entering the husband's surname with sometimes only a first initial. Then, for the wife, entered only "Mrs." and a child as "Unknown Son". Perhaps he felt he was familiar enough with the man and his family to get them counted but, unfortunately for researchers, not familiar enough to know all the names of those inthe household and not willing orable to returnto the houseto gain more data. It is also probable that when an Enumerator could not find any person at home or could not find a household member willing to participate in the census, he asked neighbors for any informationthey may have known about the family, however little, and enter it as data. In many cases Enumerators missed whole households. Households in very remote areas may have been missed or purposefully omitted because ofthe difficulty or dangerousness ofthe Journey. The original manuscript pages ofthe 1910 Census are permanently damaged in places. Many pages ofthe census had torn places which had been "repaired" with cellophane tape before they were microfilmed. The tape turned the area gray upon microfilming, and there is nothing to read except some ofthe detailed information following the taped over name. Some areas were completely "washed out" and some so faint that recording any name was impossible. Be aware that there are names that were spelled phonetIcally by the Enumerator, and the Indexers, unable to figure out what he was attempting to spell, could only duplicate what was written, letter by letter. This often happened when the Enumerator was challenged by names that were unfamiliar to him. Notwithstanding handwriting that is inherently difficult to read, ink blots, faded ink, and cellophane tape, we have worked diligently to present as complete and accurate an index as possible. The publisher regrets any misspellings, omissions, or misinterpretations that may have occurred. Please report any errors to The Genealogy Club of Albuquerque so they may be corrected.
