One of them is related to 0'ohio〃ulscae(・usandisnamed 0.yamauchil. Theotherisamemberof thegenus Kul'asawatre('1/us(s.lat),butiswidelyisolatedfromalltheothercongenerspreviously describedfromJapan. It isnamed K.,1ishlkawal. TheShirakami Mountains(alsocalledShiragami Mountains)areanon-volcanic rangestretchinglatitudinallyonthebordersofAomoriandAkitaPrefecturesonthe JapanSeasidenear thenorthernendofHonshu,NortheastJapan. The mountain rangeisnotparticularlyhigh,onlyattainingtot,243matthehighestpoint,butisex- tensivelycoveredwithprimevalbeechforestsnownotcommonintheJapaneseIslands. Forthisreason, thegreaterpartofthemountainrangeisprotectedasanationalnature conservation area and isselected as a candidate of the world cultural and natural heritage. Theinsect faunaofthismountainrangehasnotbeenintensivelyinvestigatedas yet. However, recent fieldsurveysmadebymyselfandmy friendshaverevealed that atleast threenewspeciesoftrechinebeetlesoccur there,anoculatespeciesofTi・fe(・/11- ama belonging tothegroupofT.oreas, anendogeanspeciesofOlob/emusrelated to 0. cae(us, and anendogeanspecies of Kurasawatre(,busof uncertain affinity. The latter twospecieshavesofarbeenknownfromsinglelocalitiesrespectively, whereas the7Ire(:'/llamaiswidespreadoverthemountainrangeandisvariabletosomeextent both individually and geographically. In any case, they are specifically different fromtheir relativesoccurringonMt. Iwaki-san,arecentvolcanothatstandsat the northernside of theShirakamis. Thisfactposesaninterestingproblemto theorigin of colonization by trechine beetles on recent - mostly Postglacial - volcanoes. However, itisnot thesubjectofthepresentpaper toanalysetheprocessof trechine colonization of recent volcanoes. Itspurpose is to introduceintoscience the new species of Orob/emus and Kurasawatre(・:bus apparently endemic to the Shirakamis. Theotherspecies, anocuIateTrechiama, willbedescribedinaseparatepaper tobe published in near future. 1)ThisstudyissupportedbytheGrant-in-aidforScientificResearchNo.03640633 fromtheMin- istryofEducation,ScienceandCulture,Japan. 180 Shun-lobi UENo Theabbreviationsemployedin thispaperarethesameasthoseexplainedinpre- viouspapersofmine.
