Field Book of Remembrance Trinity Episcopal Church, Pottsville, PA St. Luke’s Church - 1827 Cornerstone Contents: On October 13, 1827, the cornerstone was laid for St. Luke’s Church. A tin box was placed in the cornerstone. The contents of the tin box were: a Bible; a Prayer Book; a copy of the town plot of Pottsville; a copy of the Miners’ Journal of September 22, 1827, a statement of the laying of the cornerstone of St. Luke Church by Schuylkill Lodge No. 138 of Free Masons dated October 13, 1827; four coins of 1827, a half dollar, a dime, and two pennies. St. Luke’s was reorganized on May 11, 1836 as Trinity Church. Trinity Church - 1847 Cornerstone Contents: On May 10, 1846, the last service was held in the St. Luke’s church building, now called Trinity Church. The church building was demolished and on July 11, 1847, the cornerstone for Trinity Church was laid. A tin box was placed in the corner- stone. The inscription on the tin box: “Other foundations can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ” Trinity Church, Pottsville, Sunday, July 11, 1847 “Our help is in the name of the Lord.” Placed within the tin box was: a statement of the laying of the cornerstone of the new church dated July 11, 1847; the “Banner of the Cross” of July 10, 1848; the Miners’ Journal of January 10, 1846 containing a statement of the population of the town in the coal region; a pictorial view of Pottsville taken in 1844; and a map of the United States printed on gum elastic. Also within the tin box were placed the contents from the St. Luke’s cor- nerstone of 1827. Organ Chamber - 1887: As part of the 1887 renovations to the Chancel, an organ chamber was added to the rear northwest corner of Trinity Church on Howard Ave. The organ chamber was built over the White Family graves. A memorial plaque was placed inside the church on the Howard Ave. side. In 1905, when the Parish House was added, the organ chamber was heightened and a memorial stone cross was placed within the stonework over the Howard Avenue entrance. White Family Memorial Grave Marker and Plaque: Under the organ room of Trinity Church rests the remains of Joseph White, Born June 13, 1775 Died April 26, 1844; Andrew Barrat White, son of Joseph and Elizabeth B. White Born Aug. 22, 1807 Died March 15,1841; Frances Helen Clark, wife of Andrew B. White Born Nov. 14, 1814 Died July 7, 1866; David Clark White Born Jan. 14, 1838 Died June 22, 1840; Cornelia Ellet White Born Dec. 3, 1842 Died Sept. 5, 1843 children of Andrew B. and Francis H. White Trinity Episcopal Church Parish House - 1905 The cornerstone for the Parish House was laid by Bishop Talbot on June 21, 1905. Note the wrought iron fencing reaching to the corner of the building. The handicap ramp and the enclosed vestibule was not added until the summer of 1990. The two pictures below, taken from the top floor of the Mahantongo St. parking garage, show the handi- cap ramp and enclosed vestibule. The one picture shows the memorial cross built into the stone above the Howard Ave. entrance. The cross marks the White Family graves that are under the organ chamber. The stone cross was added when the Parish House was built in 1905 and attached to the existing church structure. Church House: This home located across from the church and at the corner of Howard Ave. and Second St., Pottsville, is one-half of a double. Purchased Dec. 30, 2001, it was renovated into office space and now houses the offices for Trinity Church, Charles Baber Cemetery, Trinity Center for Children, Shannon Trust, and the Marion Price Parish Nurse Program. Rectory: This single-family dwelling, located at 1318 Howard Ave., Pottsville, was purchased on June 29, 1996 to provide housing for the church rector –in 1996 it was the Rev. Canon Charles H. Morris. Chancel — Sanctuary Sanctuary With Free Standing Altar 1973 To Present Sanctuary Without Free Standing Altar Sanctuary Without Free Standing Altar 1922 To 1973 (The picture was taken at the Palm Sunday 1958 rededication after $206,000 of renovations were made. Bishop Warnecke is presiding and is assisted by the Archdeacon, the Ven. Dean T. Stevenson, a son of the parish.) Chancel 1887—1922 Chancel 1847—1887 Sanctuary “This Sanctuary is erected to the Glory of God and in Loving Memory of Samuel Ruckel Whitney, Frank Whit- ney, and Jessie Whitney by their Sister -1922” (The sanctuary, constructed in 1921-1922, was the focal point of what was called the 1922 Chancel renovations.) The construction was subsidized by $9,525.00 offered in the au- tumn of 1916 from Miss Jessie Whitney’s estate as specified in her will for a memorial of Miss Whitney’s family. Stone Piscina: (Located on the Gospel side of the reredos.) This stone drain goes directly into the ground. It is used to dispose of con- secrated wine or blessed water. An older use was to dispose of the sacred water used to wash the sacrament vessels. Built-in stone Credence Table: (Located on the Epistle side of the reredos.) Replaced by the Buxton memorial Credence table aside of the free standing altar, it is seldom used today. Sanctuary - Stained Glass Memorial Window Referred to as the “large thirteenth century medallion window” in the 1922 sanctuary dedication service because of its thirteenth century Gothic style and because the stained glass was medallion shaped, it is Given to the Glory of God and in Loving Memory of Anna M. Atkins. It was constructed by Nicola D’Ascenzo of Philadelphia. Enlargement of upper one-third of sanctuary window: There are six angels with each one holding a shield with Crucifixion symbols inside. The two upper angels have blue wings, the four lower angels have red wings. The angels are framed by two birds in flight with the alpha and omega symbols forming the body of the bird. The two outer groupings on either side of the four angels, hold symbols of the Crucifixion.
