COUNTY FREE LIBRARY PlftRIN 311110023Q7864 A I ONE-VOLUME EDITION JANSON By H. W. ^>^ -m 'tX 9k'~^ ^H^^r .^^ $15.00 12j116 The Sculpture of DONATELLO CO ONE-VOLUME EDITION o • • en o When Jeno Lanyi died at sea during == o World War II, his magnificent collection of new photographs of Donatello's works and his notes on the sculptor escaped de- m struction and were committed to H. W. Janson by Mrs. Lanyi-Mann, with the request that he publish them in whatever form he considered suitable. He presented the material in a critical catalogue to make possible the approach to Donatello envis- aged by Lanyi: a redefinition of the mas- ter's ocuvre on the basis of the most rigor- ous critical standards. The original two-volume edition (1957, $40) won the Charles Rufus Morey Award of the College Art Association. The digest of reviews on the back of the jacket gives some idea of the enthusiasm with which the book was received. Since its 512 collo- type plates made it too costly for as wide distribution as its reception indicated it deserved, the present edition has been pre- pared. At less than half the original price, it includes the complete text, an updating of the significant scholarly literature on Donatello since 1957, and a selection of 316 illustrations, chosen by Professor Janson to provide, as he says, "an adequate accom- paniment to the text." H. W. Janson, aprofessoratthe Institute of Fine Arts of New York University and Editor of The Art Bulletin, is author of many books and articles in the field of art history. It has been out of print for several years. The present edition is intended to make the work available to a wider public, oflFering the complete text of the first edition but a less lavish pictorial apparatus. While the number of plates has been reduced to 128, these contain 316 illustra- tions—approximately one-half the original number—and the reader will, I trust, find them an adequate accompaniment to the text. In order to keep the price of the new edition as low as possible, the text has been reproduced photographi- cally, except for necessary adjustments in references to page and plate numbers and a fewveryminor corrections. The sig- nificantscholarlyliteratureon Donatellosince 1957islisted in an Appendix (p. 250). The present edition also incorporates two recent discoveries: Plate 50, reproduced with the kind permission of Dr. Georg KauflFmann, shows the upper cornice of the Cantoria reconstructed in accordance with his find- ings; and text figure 8 (p. 218) illustrates the inscription on the South Pulpit in S. Lorenzo, first observed by Giovanni Previtali. In the Foreword of the original edition, I thanked the many individuals and institutions whose generosity made possible the preparation and publication of those volumes. It is my pleasant duty to acknowledge once more the great debt of gratitude I owe to them all. H. W. J.
