BANG MSS 2004/167 UniversityofCalifornia Berkeley Regional Oral HistoryOffice UniversityofCalifornia TheBancroftLibrary Berkeley, California THEREORGANIZATIONOFBIOLOGY AT THEUNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Daniel E. Koshland, Jr. Roderic B. Park Louise Taylor Interviews Conductedby Sally Smith Hughes in 1998 and 1999 Copyright 2003 byThe Regents ofthe UniversityofCalifornia Since 1954 the Regional Oral History Office has been interviewing leading participants in or well-placed witnesses to major events in the development ofnorthern California, the West, and the nation. Oral history is a method of collecting historical information through tape-recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge ofhistorically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. The tape recording is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. The correctedmanuscript is indexed, bound withphotographs and illustrative materials, and placed in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and in other research collections for scholarly use. Because it is primary material, oral history is not intended to present the final, verified, or complete narrative of events. It is a spoken account, offeredbythe interviewee inresponseto questioning, and as such itisreflective, partisan, deeply involved, andirreplaceable. ************************************ All uses ofthis manuscript are coveredby a legal agreementbetween The Regents ofthe University ofCalifornia and Daniel Koshland, Jr., December 14, 1998; Roderic B.
