Each issue is mailed free of charge to all alumni/ae and on an exchange basis with various insti- tutions. Back issues are not available. All correspondence should be addressed to Daniel L. Migliore, Editor, Princeton Seminary Bul- letin, CN 821, Princeton, NJ 08542. Because the policy of the Bulletin is to publish lectures and sermons by Princeton Seminary faculty and administration, and presentations by guests on the Seminary campus, we do not accept unsolicited material. FOREWORD OR THE past eighty-four years, the Princeton Seminary Bulletin has pro- F vides alumni/ae, faculty, and friends of Princeton Theological Seminary with a unique record of seminary life. Imagine, for example, that you wanted to remember what words were addressed to you as an incoming student when you attended your first opening convocation, or what challenge the commencement speaker of- fered the year you graduated, or what farewell remarks were spoken to your graduating class by the President of the Seminary. Many of these ad- dresses have been recorded in the Bulletin. The Bulletin has also served to promote the work of the Princeton Sem- inary faculty. One will find in its pages the inaugural addresses of profes- sors, reviews of faculty books, lists of faculty publications, and lectures and sermons given by faculty members on the seminary campus and elsewhere. The only previous index of the Bulletin, prepared by Gerald W. Gillette, was published in January 1964, and covered Vols. I-LV, 1907-1962. In re- sponse to many requests for information about articles, addresses, sermons, and reviews published in the Bulletin in recent years, the editorial staff be- gan to compile a new index. This process has taken over a year to complete, and we now offer the results of our work to our readers in this issue. One of the oldest seminary alumni/ae journals, the first issue of the Princeton Seminary Bulletin was prepared by a committee of students under the supervision of Professor Charles Erdman and Seminary Registrar Paul Martin. It was published during commencement season, 1907, as “an effort ... to give as complete an account as possible of the events of the Seminary year just closed” (Princeton Seminary Bulletin, 1,1 (May 1907): 1). The response to having such a record of the year’s events was so positive that the next Bulletin, published in May 1908, was described as a quarterly publication of the Trustees of the Seminary. As the task of keeping in touch with graduates grew, the size of the Bulletin also increased. A book review section was added in 1941. Until the 1960’s, the Bulletin not only published addresses, sermons, and book reviews, but also contained news of synod meetings, alumni news, and lists of each year’s graduates. Early in the presidency of James I. McCord, a new seminary publication, the Alumni/ae News, was launched. The Bulletin was thereby freed to focus increasingly on writings of faculty members, spe- cial public lectures, and the worship life of the Seminary community. In 1977 the Bulletin began a New Series, and since 1983 three issues have iv THE PRINCETON SEMINARY BULLETIN been published regularly each year. A supplementary issue, containing pa- pers presented at the Frederick Neumann Symposium on the Theological Interpretation of Scripture, was added in 1990 and will be published bien- nially. All issues of the Bulletin are currently sent without charge to over 10,000 alumni/ae in the United States and abroad, as well as to numerous libraries and schools of theology. The new index is divided into two parts. Part I covers the issues of the original series not previously catalogued (1962-1976), and Part II covers all issues of the New Series to the present (1977-1991). We have tried to make the new index as easy to use as possible. You may look for any article, address, or sermon either by title or by the author’s name; complete information is given in both entries. To conserve space we have omitted Book Notes and hard to classify material such as brief prayers, poems, and excerpts from books. Space limitations also prohibited inclusion of a separate list of book reviewers. The names of reviewers are included, however, in the sections entitled “Authors and Editors of Books Reviewed.” In the case of names with prefixes, such as “de Vaux” or “van Buren,” the names are alphabetized under the first letter of the prefix (whether the prefix is capitalized or not). We hope that this new index will serve to display the rich resources that are contained in the Bulletin, and that it will prove to be a welcome and helpful guide to our readers. KaTHLEEN D. BiLLMAN Steven R. BEcHTLER We are deeply indebted to Kathleen D. Billman and Steven R. Bechtler, editorial assistants of the Princeton Seminary Bulletin and Ph.D. candidates at the Seminary, for the many hours of demanding and tedious work that they have devoted to the compiling and editing of this index. Kadi, who has guided the project from beginning to end, will soon join the faculty of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, as Assistant Professor of Pastoral Theology. We wish her God’s blessing in her new ministry. Editor I VOLS.
