V To Denison i To Denison, we raise our song Fair college on the hill, The name that sets our souls on fire, And makes our senses thrill; \ TO Denison, my Denison, In praise our voices swell. The scenes of happy college days. The home we love so well. O morning glow which gilds the east, O sun which shines at noon, O stars which bloom at eventide, O radiant glowing moon, Look from the pathless asure dome. Shed blessing from above. In college halls and college walls. The Denison we love. When from the fold we far shall stray With souls forever young, We'll never forget our college days, These happy scenes among; And when our steps have feeble grown, Our journey almost done, E'en then with fleeting breath we'll praise, Our dear old Denison. -V.E. Field, 1903 Welcome to Denison University! One behalfofthe Denison Campus Governance Association (DCGA), I would Uke to welcome you to our community on the Hill. I am sure you are wondering what college life is like, now that you have signed up for an exciting four years ofyour life away and have stepped onto campus, embarking on a new stage ofyou life. Questions about professors, classes, roommates, athletics, and parties are only natural when thinking about your upcoming Denison experience. The great news is that you have already started to discover the answers to these questions. The college years are touted as the best years ofyour life, the last bastion offreedom that we have before we embark on that long road to the rest ofour lives. However, that does not happen by accident; you cannot expect to fall into great memories while at school. It is up to you the student, you the individual, you the member ofthe Denison Community to make those memories for yourself To sum it all up your years at college is only one thing: potential. It is up to you to recognize the directionyou wish to go and grab hold of it. We only have four years here on the hill, and they will be gone before you know it. So again, welcome to the class of2005. This is your school now, its up to you to shape it and sculpt it. Don't be afraid to make it your own. Best Wishes, Student Body President 2001-2002 Denison Campus Governance Association Organizing this book and viewing everyone's pictures has offered me a great chance to reflect on my experiences at Denison. The four years ofcollege pass so quickly, as any student can agree, but will probably not fully understand until the day of graduation. What's most important about this crazy flutter oftime is the way it is spent, and I cannot suggest anything more than to make the most out ofevery moment. The introduction pictures represent as much ofstudent life as can possibly be assembled in one small book. Though all the faces might not yet look familiar, realize that the photos suggest the — same idea ofenjoying everything that college can offer both in terms of academic or extracurricular achievements and residential community life. Learn from the pictures and think ofthem as reminders of all that awaits the new student as part ofhis or her individual Denison experience. Best wishes, Lauren Stowe D.C.G.A. Senate? Things to know... Senate is made up ofa group ofstudents electedby the general studentbody. There are two co-governors andeight senators for every class, plus two representatives from each ofthe following communities: AfricanAmerican, Asian American, G/L/B/T, Latino, Jewish, and International. Elections are early in the fall for first-year students and in the spring for all other positions. Through both legislative decisions and work within individual committees. Senate ensures direct participation in campus governance in every aspect from campus construction projects to decisions about residential life. Meet your representatives and talk to them about ways to get more involved. We meet every Tuesday night at 6:30 pm in Knapp Amphitheatre, and every Senate meeting is open to the public. We encourage everyone to visit and learn more about all ofthe work your representatives do to improve campus life. 2001-2002 Academic Calendar • August 27, Monday: Registration and classes begin • September 28-30, Friday-Sunday: Fall Parents Weekend • October 15-16, Monday-Tuesday: Fall Break • October 19-20, Friday-Saturday: Denison Homecoming • October 22, Monday: Midsemester grades due — • November 15-16, Monday Friday: Pre-registration for Spring Semester • November 20, Tuesday: Thanksgiving Vacation Begins • November 26, Monday: Classes Resume • December 7, Friday: Classes end • December 8-9, Saturday-Sunday: Reading and Study Days • December 10-1 1, Monday-Tuesday: Final Exams • December 12, Wednesday: Reading and Study Day • December 13-15, Thursday-Saturday: Final Exams ' * • December 16, Sunday: Residence Halls close, noon • January 14, Monday: Registration and classes begin • January 21, Monday: Martin Luther Kind Jr. Day Celebration (no classes) • March 6, Wednesday: Midsemester grades due • March 8, Friday: Spring Vacation begins • March 18, Monday: Classes Resume — • April 1-12, Monday Friday: Pre-registration for Fall Semester • April 12.
