Moreandmore studentsandfacultyare being introduced to Marx’s interpretation of how capitalism works (for whom it works better, for whom worse), how it arose, and where it is tending. It is apeaceful and democratic revolution, fought chiefly with books and lectures, with most of the action taking place on the fringes of the established disciplines. Paradoxically, few of the participants on either side are aware ofthe extent ofthis struggle orofthe positions that have already changed hands. The general public knows even less. Yet, its initial results are evident throughout the academy. In political science, for example, four Marxist-inspired textbooks in Americangovernment have been published since 1970, whereasbeforethattherewerenone. Inthe sameperiod, Cambridge, Oxford, and Princeton University Presses, the threemostprestigiousuniversitypublishers, haveamongthem brought out over fifteen books on Marx and Marxism, almost all of them quite sympathetic. There are over 400 courses given today in Marxist philosophy, whereas hardly any were giveninthe 1960s. Aspartofthistrend, Marxism—viewedasa serious alternative approach—is finding its way into the courses ofanincreasingnumberofnon-Marxists inpractically every discipline. Perhaps most striking has been the succes- siveelectionsoftwoMarxisthistorians, EugeneGenoveseand William A. Williams, to the presidency ofthe Organization of
