Description:
The Gardano Music Printing Firms offers the first major overview of this remarkable family's prodigious book production during the late Renaissance. The founder of the business, Antonio Gardano, published nearly 500 music books before his death in 1569; yet over the course of the following four decades, his sons, Angelo and Alessandro, published nearly 1,000 volumes. Consequently, their output represented more composers than any other printer in the Renaissance, and, indeed, the Gardano editions included the music of the most influential composers of the time, including Asola, the Gabrielis, Gesualdo, Lasso, Marenzio, Monte, Palestrina, Schutz, Vecchi, Victoria, and Wert. The original archival and bibliographic research included in this book provides a foundation for the examination of the conditions that shaped the family's production and distribution of its vast list of titles.
