HISTORY North Carolina Central University, a state-supported liberal arts institution, was chartered in 1909asa privateschool and openedtostudentsonJuly 10, 1910. Founded byJames E. Shepard, as the National Religious TrainingSchool and Chautauqua, its purpose has been the developmentof characterandsoundacademictrainingofyoungmenandwomen. Privatedonationsandstudentfees constitutedthetotalfinancialsupportoftheschool,andtheheavyburdenofcollectingfundsrestedon thepresidentandfounder, Dr.James E. Shepard. In 1923theGeneral Assemblyof North Carolina appropriated fundsforthe purchaseand maintenance of the school, and it became a public-supported institution, the Durham State Normal School. Twoyears later, the state legislature renamed theschool. North Carolina Collegefor Negroes, dedicating itasthe nation'sfirst public liberal arts institution forAfrican Americans. Several graduate and professional programswereestablished duringthe 1940s beforethe namewasagain changed in 1947to North Carolina Collegeat Durham. Theschool's namewaschanged to North Carolina Central University in 1969, and the institution became a part of the University of North Carolina system in 1972. On July 31, 1992, Attorney Julius L. Chambers was appointed Chancellor of North Carolina Central University by the Board of Governors. He assumed the office on January 1, 1993. Chancellor Chambers was formerly Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. When I sat at the Chancellor's desk for the firsttime in January, 1993, many members ofthe Class of 1997 were sitting down at their own desks or kitchen tables to complete their applicationsforadmissiontoNorthCarolinaCentral University. Bothyouand Ihavegonethroughthesepastfour yearstogether;whenyoureceivedyourdegreesinMayIsharedyourexcitement. ThefouryearstheClassof 1997spentonthiscampuswereyearsofgreatsignificancetothe University TogetherwecreatedagroundbreakingnewCommunityServiceProgram.Yourwillingnesstovolunteeryourtime tothecommunitywasgreatlyencouraging. We havealsowatched as majorconstruction projects beganonour campus.Whenyoureturntothecampusforyourfifthyearreunion,youwillseethoseprojectscompleted:anew Biomedical-Biotechnology Research Center, a new residential facilityon thesloping hilljust belowChidley Hall whichwehopetoconvert intoaconventioncenter,a newSchoolofEducation,therenovationandconversionof Women'sGymnasiumintoastudentservicesfacilityandenhancedfacilitiesacrossthecampus. Manyofyouvisited meatmyhomeduringthe pastfouryearsforourbookclubmeetings. Togetherwe examinedcritical issuesraised bythosebooks, expressedouropinionsfreelyandendeavoredtogobeyondthe pages to find meaning in our lives. Because your teachers joined us, we were part of a'significant intergenerational endeavor. You learned, and was I remindedwhatitmeanstobeapartofthecompanyof educated men and women on whom our nation and ourworlddependforleadershipandcounsel. TheseexperienceswerenotlimitedtotheClass of 1997 alone. This yearbook recalls the pastyearon ourcampus:theundergraduateclassesof1998, 1999, and 2000, thegraduateand professional students, the facultythestaff,andtheadministration. Youwillfind, I believe, that the memory of this year becomes more preciousasyourlifegoeson. I lookforwardtorecalling thesedayswithyouintheyear2002andinanniversary yearstocome. Myverybestwishestoyou.
