'.r- . .^mM i UNIVERSITY DEDICATION DAVE HEFLIN The 1998BroomyearbookisdedicatedtoMr.DaveButlerHeflin.DavehasbeenanintegralpartofDeltaStatesince196Swhenhe receivedhisBSEinEnglishfromwhatwasthencalledDeltaStateCollege.HewentontoreceiveanMSincommunicationsfromthe UniversityofSouthernMississippiin1968.In 1969,DavewasemployedatDeltaStateasaninstructorofspeechandacoordinator ofradioandtelevisionproduction.Hetooksabbaticalleavein1974-75tostudyrecreationatTexasTech.Hereturnedinthefallof 1975asassisstantprofessorofhealth,physicaleducation,andrecreation. DaveHeflinhasreceivednumerousawardsduringhisteachingcareeratDeltaState.HewaspresentedtheprestigiousKossm.an OutstandingTeacherAwardatDSUin1986.In1989,DavewasrecognizedbytheMississippilegislatureastheHBADWAE OutstandingTeacheratDeltaStateUniversity.AmongotherhonorsreceivedbyMr.HeflinaretheBolivarCountyChamberof CommerceServiceAward,thePiKappaAlphaDistinguishedServiceAward,thePrideinTeachingAwardbytheMSAllianceofHPER andDance,andtheDSUPanhellenicTeacheroftheYearAward.DavealsowasnotedwithaPhiMuBigBrotherAwardin1980and doesaone-manshowinwoodsculpture. DaveHeflinisprobablymostwellknownbythestudentsandfacultyofDeltaStateasanavidnatureloverandoutdoorsman.He hasshownsomanypeoplehowtoappreciatetheoutdoorsandenjoyoutdooractivities.DaveisthebackboneofmanySpringBreak skiingtrips,ropecourseclimbingexcursions,andsororityoutingstoTishomingoforcampingandthose"crazygames"forwhich heisnoted. DaveHeflinandhiswifeBrendahaveasonLandandtwodaughters.SpringandAmber.Theyarealsoblessedwithtwo grandchildren. ThestaffoftheBroomwouldliketoexpressitsappreciationofDaveHeflinandsay"ThankYou"forallthatyouhavedonefor thestudents,aswellasthefaculty,ofDeltaStateUniversity.
