Though much more compact, the Concise Edition nevertheless provides substantial choice, offering both a strong selection of canonical authors and a sampling of lesser-known works. With an unparalleled selection of illustrations and of contextual materials, accessible and engaging introductions, and full explanatory annotations, these volumes provide concise yet extraordinarily wide-ranging coverage for British Literature survey courses. Authors new to the volume include Margaret Cavendish and Phyllis Wheatley; Everymanand the York Crucifixion play now appear in the bound book. Volume A now also offers substantially expanded representation of medieval and early modern Celtic literary traditions, as well as new materials related to print culture, including early modern emblems and manuscripts, and early eighteenth-century periodicals. Material that no longer appears in the bound book may in almost all cases be found on the companion website; many longer works are also available from the publisher in separate volumes that may at the instructor’s request be bundled together with the anthology at little or no extra cost to the student. It sets a new standard by which all other anthologies of British literature will now have to be measured.” Graham Hammill, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York “With the publication of The Broadview Anthology of British Literature, teachers and students in survey and upper-level undergraduate courses have a compelling alternative to the established anthologies by Norton and Longman. … This is a very real intellectual, as well as pedagogical, achievement.” Nicholas Watson, Harvard University “Forty-five years [after publication], the Norton remains the 800 lb gorilla in the classroom. But it faces vigorous and growing competition from other anthologies, notably The Longman Anthology of British Literature and The Broadview Anthology of British Literature. … The most recent entry in the field, the Broadview, [is distinguished by its] selections, longer introductions, more visual material, and … [by its] Web component.” The Chronicle of Higher Education “… I have been using The Broadview Anthology of British Literature for three years now. I love it—and so do my students!” Martha Stoddard-Holmes, California State University, San Marcos P r i n t e d i n Ca n a d a “… an excellent anthology. Good selections (including some nice surprises), just the right level of annotation, affordable—and a hit with my students. I will definitely use it again.” Ira Nadel, University of British Columbia ISBN 978-1-55481-312-4 “I have been delighted to discover The Broadview Anthology of British Literature. It offers a series of unexpected but welcome gems … set here and there among a fine collection of the usual suspects. Its stunning combination of breadth and depth allows that most welcome of qualities in a survey class—flexibility. … The anthology is a real pleasure to use.” D.K.
