Verily, We give you the glad tid ings of a son, His name will be Yahya. ' _ l_* u^iC (j£J j 4ja1Ijj 1s _ s , ,i=D l)u^ ^ u^. s~ ix n **— f&J (It was said to his son): “O Yahya hold fast the Scripture.” And We gave him wisdom while yet a child, and (made him) sympathetic to men as a mercy from Us, and pure from sins; and he was righteous and dutiful toward his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient. So Peace on him the day he was born, the day that he dies and the day that he will be raised up to life again!1 Allah, the Exalted, said: 4 [("] jjaJlJall jfa J^) S, Ois° • 0 .'ojr.j djSjj # And Zakariya and Yahya and Jesus and Iliyas, each one of them was of the righteous.2 And Allah, the Exalted, said: # So We answered his call, and We bestowed upon him Yahya3 Prophet Yahya’s Father Yahya is a prophet; and his father, Zakariya, is also a prophet 1 Surah Maryam, 19:12-15 2 Surah A!-'An‘am, 6:85 3 Surah Al-'Anbiya, 21:90 Translator’s Addendum \ J Prophet Yahya’s Cousin Shaykh Abdur-Razzaq al-Badr said: Yahya ibn Zakariya ^ and Jesus ibn Maryam y4'< lived during the same time period. They were both prophets sent to the children of Israel. They were first cousins. Jesus is the son of Maryam, who is the maternal aunt of Yahya. Zakariya married the sister of Maryam, the daughter of ‘Imran. His wife gave birth to Yahya iss. As for Maryam, she gave birth to Jesus therefore, Yahya and Jesus are cousins. Likewise, they were close in age.
