In the 1990s I became involved with issues oflanguage education and assessment. I have taught Lithuanian as a foreign language at the University of Helsinki and I am the author of several textbooks and teacher reference books for teaching Lithuanian as a second language including CD-ROM Po truputf, Practical grammar of Lithuanian, Threshold Level, Vantage Level and Waystage Level of Lithuanian. I have also published papers on applied linguistics, sociolinguistics and anthroponymics and have been engaged in several international research projects. Virginija Stumbriene I have been teaching Lithuanian to foreigners at the Department of Lithuanian Studies of Vilnius University since 1992. My field of interest is teaching and testing Lithuanian as a foreign language and I am one of the authors of a textbook for adults Ne dienos be lletuvi4 kalbos and textbooks for young learners La bas and Mano ir tavo !ails Lletuva. I was joint author of the book 365 Lithuanian verbs which is very popular among students. They call it 'the blue Bible' because the cover of the first edition was blue. I also took part in developing and writing Lithuanian language tests for native and foreign learners and wrote descriptions of Lithuanian for At Luzis, a series of books for language examiners and teachers. I am involved in the training of teachers and examiners. Only got a minute? Lithuania is a small country on the Baltic Sea, measuring 65,000 km2• Lithuania's population totals more than 3 million people, of which 84 per cent are ethnic Lithuanians. In Lithuania people still speak an ancient language that is similar to Latin and Sanskrit. Antoine Meillet, who was one of the most distinguished French linguists of the 20th century once said, that if you want to listen to how the ancient Indo-Europeans spoke, then you should go to a Lithuanian village and listen to the language of Lithuanian peasants. Lithuanian is indeed a very archaic language, especially its grammar and vocabulary. There are two main dialects of Lithuanian, which are Aukstaitian and Zemaitian, and numerous sub-dialects, which are still spoken. If an Aukstaitian from a rural area would speak with a .Zemaitian from a rural area, they would have difficulties in understanding one another unless they used standard Lithuanian. Though Lithuanian itself is ancient, standard Lithuanian was developed rather recently, a little more than 100 years ago. It is based on the Western Aukstaitian dialect. Though Lithuania's traditions of statehood stretch back to the 13th century, Lithuanian was not recognized as the state language until the 20th century. After the First World War with the establishment of the Republic of Lithuania, Lithuanian was recognized as the official state language for the first time in 1922. During the Soviet period, Lithuanian was pushed out of the public sphere, in areas such as transport, administration, industry, the police, etc. After the regaining of independence in 1990, Lithuanian returned to the public sphere, and is protected by the Constitution and the Law on the State language. The Lithuanian alphabet consists of 32 letters based on the Latin alphabet. Lithuanian doesn't have
