Studies and reports of District Museum Prague-East Taxonomical Series 3 (1-2): 47-50, 2007 Systematic and synonymic notes upon certain species of Dermestidae (Coleoptera) Jiří HÁVA Private Entomological Laboratory & Collection, Únětice u Prahy 37, CZ-252 62 Praha-západ, Czech Republic; e-mail: [email protected] Taxonomy, new synonymies, new combination, Coleoptera, Dermestidae, World Abstract. The following new nomenclatorial acts are proposed: Hemirhopalum Sharp, 1902 (= Falsocryptorhopalum Pic, 1936 syn. n.); the type species is newly combined as Hemirhopalum impressum (Pic, 1936) comb. n. (= Hemirhopalum plaumanni Mroczkowski, 1958 syn. n.); Trogoderma variabile Ballion, 1878 (= Globicornis quadriguttata unifasciata Pic, 1908 syn. n.); Anthrenus (Anthrenops) coloratus Reitter, 1881 (= Anthrenus rufescens Pic, 1923 syn. n.). INTRODUCTION The work presented here is based on the Pic´s dermestid type material kept in the Museum national d´Histoire naturelle, Paris, France. The morphological characters, including the genitalia of the type material, were studied. Locality labels of the mentioned material are cited in the original version. Remarks of the authors are found in square brackets [ ]. Data on separate labels are indicated by slashes (\). RESULTS Hemirhopalum Sharp, 1902 Hemirhopalum Sharp, 1902: 651 - type species: Hemirhopalum hadrotomoide Sharp, 1902: 652. Falsocryptorhopalum Pic, 1936: 1 syn. n. - type species: Falsocryptorhopalum impressum Pic, 1936: 2. Hemirhopalum impressum (Pic, 1936) comb. n. Falsocryptorhopalum impressum Pic, 1936: 2. Hemirhopalum plaumanni Mroczkowski, 1958: 56 syn. n. 47 Type material. Falsocryptorhopalum impressum: holotype (♂) labelled: „Brasilien, Nova Teutonia, Fritz Plaumann“ [printed label] \ „Derm 7“ [small, handwritten label] \ „Type“ [small, yellowish, handwritten label] \ „Falsocryptorhopalum ng. impressum“ [handwritten label] \ „Hemirhopalum impressum (Pic) comb. n., J. Háva det. 2007“ [white, printed label]. Holotype deposited in MNHN. Hemirhopalum plaumanni: paratypes (2 ♂♂, 1 ♀) labelled: „Brasilien, Nova Teutonia, 27°11´B, 52°23´L, Fritz Plaumann, ix.1941, 300 bis 500m“ \ „Holotype, Hemirhopalum plaumanni, M. Mroczkowski 1958“ [red, printed label]. Paratypes deposited in MZPW. Other material studied. „Brasilien, Nova Teutonia, 27°11´B, 52°23´L, Fritz Plaumann, x.1938“, 1 ♂, (JHAC). Original description. „Falsocryptorhopalum n.g. (Dermestide). Subovatus; capite libero, oculis grandis, paulo prominutis; antennis brevibus, probabiliter 8 articulatis, articulo 1 lato, sat breve, 2e valde transverso, sequentibus brevibus, parum distinctis, clava lata, biarticula, articulo penultimo grande, triangulare, ultimo subovato, minore; thorace lateraliter marginato; elytris ad basin et lateralitermarginatis. Genre nettement différent de Cryptorhopalum Guer. Par la tête dégagée du prothorax, la massue particulière des antennes, et établi pour l´espèce nouvelle suivante.“ Remarks. The genus Falsocryptorhopalum was described by Pic (1936) from Brazil, but in the original description, there is a big error in the number of antennal segments. Pic described this genus according „probabiliter 8 articulatis“, but the antennae actually have 11 segments! Pic (1936) did not compare the genus Falsocryptorhopalum with the genus Hemirhopalum described by Sharp (1902). The both genera are identical in all the morphological characters. The genus Falsocryptorhopalum is a junior synonym of the genus Hemirhopalum and type species is presently newly combined as Hemirhopalum impressum (Pic, 1936) comb. n. The species Hemirhopalum plaumanni was described and illustrated by Mroczkowski (1958: 58, figs 10-16) very well in his review of the genus Hemirhopalum. The species is identical in the all morphological characters with the Falsocryptorhopalum impressum Pic, 1936 and it is a junior synonym of this species. Distribution. Species known from Brazil only: Nova Teutonia. Trogoderma variabile Ballion, 1878 Globicornis quadriguttata unifasciata Pic, 1908: 41 syn. n. Type material. Holotype (♀) labelled: “Syrie (bombé)” [small, handwritten label] \ „Type“ [small, yellowish, handwritten label] \ „Gl.4-guttata v.esp. unifasciata Pic“ [handwritten label] \ „Trogoderma variabile Ball. (= Gl. quadriguttata unifasciata syn. n.) J. Háva det. 2007“ [white, printed label]. Holotype deposited in MNHN. Remarks. The subspecies Globicornis quadriguttata unifasciata was described by Pic 48 (1908) from Syria, but according to the present study of the holotype, all the morphological characters of this subspecies are identical with T. variabile Ballion, 1878. The name Globicornis quadriguttata unifasciata is a junior synonym of T. variabile. Anthrenus (Anthrenops) coloratus Reitter, 1881 Anthrenus rufescens Pic, 1923: 3 syn. n. Type material. Holotype (♀) labelled: “Calcutta“ [printed] \ „Type“ [handwritten] \ “rufescens nsp” [handwritten]. Holotype deposited in MNHN. Remarks. The species Anthrenus rufescens was described by Pic (1923) from India: Calcutta. The holotype is completely destroyed, only abdomen being mounted. Other parts of adult specimen not present in the museum boxes A. Taghavian (pers comm.). The female genitalia are identical with female genitalia of A. coloratus Reitter, 1881. The name Anthrenus rufescens is a junior synonym of A. coloratus. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS. The author is indebted very much to Azadeh Taghavian and Thiery Deuve (MNHN), Maciej Mroczkowski (Warszawa, Poland) and Marcin Kadej (Wroclaw, Poland) for loans and to Miloslav Rakovič (Prague, Czech Republic) for his comments on the English manuscript.
