ThelistofpatriotswhostudiedatWilliamandMaryislonganddistinguishedandincludes threeAmericanPresidents,ThomasJefferson,JamesMonroe,andJohnTyler,sixteenmem- bersoftheContinentalCongress,foursignersoftheDeclarationofIndependence,fourjus- ticesoftheSupremeCourtoftheUnitedStates,includingJohnMarshall,andmanymembers ofCongress,cabinetmembers,anddiplomats.Additionally,GeorgeWashingtonreceivedhis surveyor'slicensefromtheCollegeandafterhisPresidencyservedastheCollege'sChancellor. WhileJeffersonwasGovernorofVirginia,hisinfluencewasinstrumentalinanumberof changesatWilliamandMarythatresultedinimportant"firsts"fortheCollege.Thefirstlaw schoolinAmericawasestablishedatWilliamandMary;theCollegealsoadoptedthenation's firsthonorsystem;andachairofmodernlanguageswascreated.In1776,PhiBetaKappa, thenation'sfirstintercollegiatefraternity,wasestablishedatWilliamandMary.And,in1781, byunitingthefacultiesoflaw,medicine,andthearts,theCollegebecameAmerica'sfirsttrue university. WilliamandMarysuspendedoperationsduringtheCivilWarandagainin1881 whenitsfi- nancialresourcesweredepleted.PresidentBenjaminEwell,however,kepttheCollegeCharter alivebyringingthebelloftheWrenBuildingtomarktheopeningofeachterm.In1906,the CommonwealthofVirginiapurchasedtheCollege,makingitpartofthestatesystemofhigher education,andin1918,theCollegebecameco-educational.Afteraperiodofsteadygrowth, theCollegegavebirthtofournewcolleges,threeofwhichhavebecomefour-yearinstitutions inurbanareasofVirginia:RichmondProfessionalInstitute,nowVirginiaCommonwealthUni- versity;theNorfolkDivisionoftheCollegeofWilliamandMary,nowOldDominionUniversity; ChristopherNewportCollege,nowChristopherNewportUniversity;andRichardBlandCollege. TodayWilliamandMary,stillamoderate-sizeduniversity,includesfivedifferentschools.Arts andSciences,withbothundergraduateandgraduatesections,offersinstructionin25areas ofconcentration,aswellasin12mastersand6doctoralprograms.TheSchoolofEducation offersanundergraduateconcentrationinelementaryeducation,aminorinsecondaryeduca- tion,andgraduateprogramsthatinclude4masters,1 educationalspecialist,and2doctoral degreeprograms.TheSchoolofBusinessAdministrationfeaturesboththetraditionalBBAand MBAdegreesandalsoofferspart-timeandweekendprogramsforspeciallyadmittedcandi- dates.FromtheLawSchool,bothJDandLL.M.degreesareavailable.Andfinally,theSchool ofMarineScience,locatedashortdrivefromthecentralcampus,providesbothmastersand doctoralprogramsforstudentsinterestedinthebiologicalandphysicalsciences.
