The first is how fast time is flying by, and secondly, how we spend and use that time becomes more and more relevant and significant to us. I can still remember sitting in my seventh grade math class thinking how slowly time was passing. My thought was: “Will it ever get to 3:00 p.m. and dismissal?” It seemed like th e clock hand was barely moving, if at all. And now, it seems like it’s on speed dial. “What, it’s January, 2011; what happened to 2010?” is more my thought today. And yet, the precious gift of time is what we have left and come down to. How can I, as I get older and older, use my time more wis ely, more faithfully, more lovingly? My prayer for myself and all of you is th at we use the time remaining in our lives to reflect more deeply on the beauty and the uniqueness of all of our lives and ask the Lord to help us reveal and share it with those we encounter every day. In this way we’ll become the special gift of life that we were created for and time will be the means f or us to do this and not the focus anymore. Our congratulations and prayers go out to Jennifer Byrnes, a parishioner, who will make her First Profession into the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate on Saturday, January 8th, at 4:30 p.m. Our thanks go out to Carmelita Galvez and the Filipino community and to all who helped to make the Simbang Gabi Mass and reception such a beautiful and meaningful celebration. May the new year be filled with many blessing s for you and your loved ones, good health to all, joy in your hearts, and God’s peace spreading throughout the world. Have a happy, and most beautiful new year! IF YOU’RE LONGING TO FILL AN EMPTINESS. . . Catholics Come Home Chicago in the Christmas Season W hat was your favorite part of Christmas day? When posing that question to a room full of college students, I expected to hear about home-cooked meals, sleeping-in and no homework. To my surprise, almost every answer included, “my whole family was together.” Those young people experienced being far away from home for an extended period, and for some it was a new experience. They would hate to admit it, but during the year many of them felt a real longing to be back in a place of warmth, safety and acceptance. They longed to be home. If you watch television throughout the day you may see an advertisement called “Home” that was created by Catholics Come Home. Listen carefully and you will hear the narrator say: “It’s our refuge from chaos. It’s a place where the broken receive healing, and repentant hearts find mercy.” These are familiar desires for all of us. We have all felt a longing for a loving community and a place where we are always welcome and always forgiven. This desire can be fulfilled when you have a place that feels like your best vision of a home. During this Christmas Season, the Catholic Church welcomes every person into a parish, which can become a safe refuge and offer each person comfort. The last lines from the TV ad are: “If you’re longing to fill an emptiness. . .or seeking a way home. . . We invite you to experience the peace that only comes from God.” Whether you are at church today after a long absence or you come to Mass regularly, we want you to feel that this parish is your home. We want to get to know you. Look through the bulletin and choose a ministry or event that seems interesting. Join us. We look forward to seeing you at Mass for prayer and worship and together we will search for the peace that comes from God. Welcome Home! These angels were to remind them of the important role God’s messengers play in the story of salvation, e.g., the Angel of the Lord coming to Zachariah and the shepherds and the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary. Jesus also teaches that each of us has a guardian angel. SCHOOL OF RELIGION FAITH FORMATION ADVISORY BOARD This past summer a new Faith Formation Advisory Board was created. Its current priority is to create a Mission Statement and manifest a vision for itself. The Board is also looking at ways to attract greater family participation in the religious education program and at Sunday Masses. School of Religion Activity Days were highlighted as an integral element to this participation. The members of the Board are: Mr. John Crivellone, Mrs. Sue Ludwig, Mrs. Debra Morge- Erickson, Ms. Katherine Tomich, and Mr. Gordon (chair). STAR GAZERS Around a thousand years ago a stonemason in Autun, France, was working on decorations for the city’s new cathedral. One of his carvings shows a charming scene. The three kings, all wearing crowns and sharing one cozy bed, are being awakened by an angel pointing to a star. The angel’s finger is gently touching the hand FROM OUR FRIENDS of one of the kings on top of the patterned coverlet. This king’s eyes have popped open in surprise, while the other two slumber on. The stonemason artistically combined two biblical stories into one. The star reminds us of the one that led the kings to Bethlehem, while the PERPETUAL NOVENA TO ST.
