About the Authors Jan Klein is the director emeritus of the Max PlanckSocietyfortheAdvancementofScience and Frances R. and Helen M. Pentz Visiting Professor of Science, Department of Biology, Pennsylvania State University. Several happenstancesseemtohavepredestinedhimto become ultimately Mendel’s biographer. He was born in a small Silesian village, a mere cyclingdistancefromHyncˇice,Mendel’sbirth- place. Like Mendel, he also grew up on small farmandstudiedatthesameschoolasMendel, the Gymnasium in Opava. He earned a PhD in genetics,towhichhethendevotedhisresearch career.AndheistherecipientoftwoMendelmedals,oneawardedbytheMoravian MuseumatBrnoandtheotherbytheCzechAcademyofSciencesatPraha. Norman Klein is a freelance illustrator, who holdsaMasterofFineArtsdegreeinIllustra- tion and Animation with a Minor in Graphic Design and Art History. He lives in Miami, Florida. vii .
