Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR: 2009-10) INTRODUCTION I am pleased to submit the Sixth Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR: 2009-10) of the IQAC to the NAAC. This report consists of the information given in response to the forty-one criteria set by the NAAC. Our College has been taking efforts in realizing the goals and objectives set by Shri Aillak Pannalal Digambar Jain Pathashala, Solapur, the Trust with a glorious history of 125 years. This report is a realization of the vision of the founders of the Trust and the College. The College has already submitted the RAR to NAAC for the proposed Reaccreditation. Place: Solapur (Dr Ajit H. Manikshete) Date: 28th May 2010 PRINCIPAL 1 Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR: 2009-10) Name of the Institution: - Year of Report: - 2009-10 Walchand College of Arts & Science, Ashok Chowk, Solapur Part A: The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year 1. The College has been sanctioned the Post Graduate courses in Bio- informatics, Genetics (both integrated), Hindi and English from this academic year. The courses have been initiated with sufficient strength from this year. Local Inquiry Committees from Solapur University visited the College in connection with approving the Final Year of B.Sc. Biotechnology and the Second Year of P.G. in Bio-informatics, Genetics, Hindi and English. 2. The College has initiated Certificate Courses from this year. The Dept of Chemistry has initiated „Certificate Course in Textile Chemistry‟, Depts of Physics and Mathematics have started „Certificate Course in C Language‟ and Depts of Botany and Microbiology have collectively begun „Add-On Course on Naturopathy and Cosmetology for Personal Health‟. 3. The Dept of Mathematics organized Two-Day UGC Sponsored State Level Workshop on „Mathematical Models for Physics and Electronics‟ on 3rd and 4th August 2009. The Dept also conducted One Day Solapur University Level Workshop on „New Curriculum of Mathematics for B.Sc. Part I (Semester- wise) & B.Sc. Part III‟ on 4th December 2009. The Dept of Geography organized Two Day UGC Sponsored State Level Seminar on „Agriculture and Rural Development after Independence of India‟ on 2nd and 3rd January 2010. The Dept of Social Work conducted different Seminars and Workshops for students. The P G Centre of the College organized Students‟ Seminar for Marathi, Hindi, English and Economics. 4. The College has been carrying 03 Major and 12 Minor Research Projects currently. Besides, there have been submitted as many as 29 proposals for Minor Research Projects and 04 for Major Research Projects. 5. The College has set up a Primary Health Centre on the campus. The Health Centre is meant for all the Colleges of Walchand Group of Education. 6. The Girls‟ Hostel too has been expanded during this academic year. 2 Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR: 2009-10) PART –B 1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution The N.S.S. Unit of the College carried out a rally on the occasion of Rajarshi Shahu birth anniversary on 26th June 2009 with a view to promote the value of social integrity and equality. The Dept of Ardhamagadhi organized a programme on the occasion of Shrut Panchami involving the ritual of Granth Pooja 0n 27th June 2009. The Dept of Geography conducted a guest lecture on Population Day, 11th July 2009. Dr Mrs Chakradev of Sangameshwar College, Solapur was the chief guest who guided the students. Dr Umakant Walwekar, a local medical practitioner was invited by the N.S.S. Unit and the Dept of Ardhamagadhi to guide the students and teachers in the wake of Swine Flu in Solapur. The resource person delineated the symptoms of Swine Flu and the measures to avoid the disease by virtue of slide show. The Competitive Examinations Coaching Centre of the College invited Dr Jagdish Patil, the District Collector of Solapur and Shri Virendra Singh, the Chief Executive Officer of Zillah Parishad, Solapur for the inaugural of the yearly activities on 14th August 2009. The guest guided the students and distributed prizes to the successful candidates of C.E.C.C. On 12th September 2009 the inaugural of Adult Literacy Programme and Rural Development Centre at Pathri village was organized by the Dept of Social Work at the hands of Shri Arvindji Doshi, Chairman, S.A.P.D.J. Pathshala, Solapur and Dr K.N.Bavale, Director, State Resource Centre, Pune. The Dept of Hindi organized the Hindi Day celebrations by inviting Dr Sadashiv Kadam, faculty in Hindi, K.B.P. College, Pandharpur. The Chief Guest illuminated the significance of Hindi in integrating the diverse constituents of India. The N.S.S. Day was celebrated by organizing a guest lecture by Dr Maya Patil, Head, Dept of AIHC & Archeology, Solapur University, Solapur on 24th September 2009. The Dept of Ardhamagadhi organized Kshamawali Parv and Paryushan Parv on 25th September 2009. Smt Viddyulata Shah, Mrs Kalpana Kasture and Shri Nemchand Angre were the chief guests. The guests guided the students in the values of mercy and moral uprightness. The Alumni Association of the College, Dept of Chemistry and Gandhi Forum, Solapur organized a seminar on the occasion of Mahatma 3 Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR: 2009-10) Gandhi birth anniversary. The former Principal of Sangameshwar College, Solapur Shri Naresh Badnore was the chief speaker on this occasion. Principal Dr Ajit Manikshete chaired the programme. On the eve of Gandhi birth anniversary an essay competition was conducted on various aspects of Gandhian philosophy. A seminar was organized on 14th September 2009 in collaboration with Global Talent Track Pvt. Ltd. by Dept of Chemistry on „Career Opportunities‟. Shri Jayant Dev was the chief guest. Another seminar on Green Chemistry was conducted by the Dept of Chemistry on 6th October 2009. Shri Rajesh Moholkar and Miss Ashwini Gunnal were the key speakers. The programmes were presided over by Principal Dr Ajit Manikshete. Various Departments of the College have brought about Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a view to have an interface with the other stakeholders of higher education. In addition the MoUs are aimed at having exchange of expertise on various branches of knowledge. The College helps the qualified students reach the industries for placement purposes too. The Childline, Dept of Social Work celebrated the Children‟s Day by inviting Dr Jagdish Patil, District Collector, Solapur and Miss Praniti Shinde, MLA, Solapur. The guests remembered Pandit Nehru and his vision of developing India through empowering children. Centre for Leadership Unit of the College organized a guest lecture by Dr Bhushankumar Upadhyay, Police Commissioner, Solapur on 17th November 2009. The programme was initiated by karate demonstration by students. The guest spoke on Leadership Quality. The Dept of Ardhamagadhi and the N.S.S. Unit of the College organized a guest lecture by Dr Sharayu Shah, a social activist of Mumbai on 9th December 2009. The lady spoke on life skills and conducted an exhibition of the articles made out of domestic waste. The N.S.S. Unit carried out Blood Donation Camp on 15th December 2009 in the memory of Late Bhausaheb Gandhi, one of the visionaries of the Pathashala. Students and teachers donated blood voluntarily. On 12th January 2010, Youth Day, Dept of Social Work invited Dr Shirish Kumathekar, local surgeon and Shri Umankant Kamble, Social Welfare Officer to deliver lectures on de-addiction. The students and teachers took a vow for addiction-free life. The N.S.S. Unit conducted a guest lecture on Personality Development by Dr Deepak Nanaware, faculty in English, Dayanand College, Solapur on De-addiction. A seminar on e Learning: Essence of Education was organized in collaboration with Academic Advisors, Pune and Dept of Social Work on 16th January 2010. Shri Arvindji Doshi, Chairman, S.A.P.D.J. 4 Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR: 2009-10) Pathashala, Solapur, Shri Mahesh Shah and Mrs Susan Raj were the chief guests and speakers. The seminar was aimed at highlighting the latest developments in the cyber world and distance education. The Dept of Chemistry and Employment Cell organized a poster presentation by students on Careers after Graduation on 10th January 2010. Principal Dr Ajit Manikshete inaugurated the programme. The Science Club conducted Inter-collegiate Patriotic Song Singing competitions on the occasion of Republic Day. Shri Mihir Shah of Confederation of Indian Industries, Pune delivered a lecture on „Personality Development and opportunities of Education Abroad‟. The programme was organized by the Dept of Chemistry and Employment Cell of the College on 27th January 2010. Principal Dr Ajit Manikshete chaired the programme. The 47th Annual Prize Distribution Function was organized on 29th January 2010. Dr R.V.Kirdak, Director, Higher Education, Pune and Dr Vijay Kanetkar, local physician and surgeon were the chief guests. The meritorious students of the College were felicitated at the hands of the guests. The annual report was presented by Principal Dr Ajit Manikshete. The Function was presided over by Dr Ranjeet Gandhi, Honorary Secretary, Shri A.P.D.J. Pathashala, Solapur. Shriman Bhushan Shah and Shriman Suhas Shah, the trustees graced the occasion. The Dept of Biotechnology organized a Career Counseling programme in the field of Power Utility and Entrepreneurship on 3rd February 2010. Dr Andand Karve and Shri Shamkant Mirashi were the key speakers. The programme was presided over by Dr Arvindji Doshi, Chairman, Shri A.P.D.J. Pathashala, Solapur. On 15th February 2010 a workshop was carried out by Childline of Dept of Social Work in which Mrs Alaka Kakade, a local counselor, delivered a lecture on children and their psychology. A guest lecture was organized by Shri Ravindra Mokashi, a social activist, on Students‟ Suicides and Commercialization of Education on 16th February 2010. The Science Club of the College organized a guest lecture on the Science Day on 26th February 2010. Shri S.N.Puranik of Markandeya High School, Solapur was the chief guest. He spoke on Modern World based on Scientific Progress. Study tours of different Departments viz. Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Geology, Geography, Social Work and Biotechnology have been carried out to different places in and outside Maharashtra. 5 Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR: 2009-10) The Dept of Chemistry sent nineteen students of B.Sc. Part III of Chemistry, Zoology and Mathematics to H.N. College of Commerce, Solapur to participate in Three Day Camp on Entrepreneurship Awareness organized from 15th to 17th January 2010. Students of the Dept of Zoology participated in State Level Census of Indian Great Bustards at Nannaj Bird Sanctuary. 2. Examination reforms implemented The Departments in the College conduct Class tests and seminars to assess the uptake of the students. The College had home examinations in the Second term.
