Are globalization, internationalization, and Europeanization consipiring to unbundle territoriality? If so, are sovereignty, citizenship, the welfare state, and democracy unraveling as well? Is a new postnational, nonterritorial form of political orga- nization, heralded by the European Union, being born? With a focus on Europe, this book explores these issues from various substantive andtheoreticalperspectives.Theauthorsfindevidenceofthediffusion of authority both within and beyond the state, producing novel insti- tutional arrangements and new modes of governance. But the United Statesmayprovidemoreusefulinsightsintothenewdispensationthan theideaofapostnational,nonterritorialpolitics.Interestincontempo- rarychallengestodemocracyrunthroughoutthisbook.
