However, ‘Red” animals have appeared since the earliest days of the breed. According to Lloyd Pickard, writing in the 1985 E L Canadian Angus History Update, Red females were eligible for registry in the A Red Mac Sherok 28D, High- Canadian herdbook until 1921, though Red males were not. In 1921, the by-law S Selling Heifer at $3,500, E.A. was changed to read “an animal red in color, shall not be eligible for registry,” (Ted) Hames Jr. E This state persisted until 1968, when there was interest in uniting the Red and L C Black Angus into one Herdbook in Canada. The change was made April 3, A 1968, with the stipulation that “Red” precede the herd prefix in naming Red N Angus cattle registered in Canada. N In the beginning, Canadian-born Red Angus could not fill the demand, I P and cattle were imported from the United States, where there are two E associations, the American Angus Association, and the Red Angus Association H of America founded in 1954. Animals registered in the Red Angus Association T were eligible for registry in the Canadian Association. Red Emulous 69D, 1974 Calgary Spring Show Grand In the early 1960s an interest in using and raising Red Angus cattle was Champion Bull growing in Southern Alberta. The MacKinnon Ranch of Bassano, was credited with importing the first Red Angus bulls from the U.S. The Mackenzie family of Mountain View, Alberta, and Gary Conrad of Fort Macleod were credited with importing both females and bulls to start their purebred Red Angus herds. Over the subsequent 5-10 years other breeders across the country started to put together their herds. In the fall of 1972, a group of four new Red Angus breeders, at Millarville, Alberta, held a field day, to showcase their animals, and offer information on the breed. These breeders were David Glaister, Mike Rogers, David Heifer at 1978 Farmfair Wildman and Earl Watson with Valley Cattle Co. It was felt at that time, in Edmonton that promotion was a priority, in order to advance the breed. To that end, a meeting was held, and the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society was born. Twelve breeders present that day, are considered the founding members. Of those 12, 45 years later, five are still operating as purebred operations. The 12 Founding Members Were: Mackenzie Brothers • Gordon Habberfield • Ken Fraser (Six Mile) Seaman Family (Valley Cattle Co.) • Sibbald Brothers (Triple SSS) Earl Watson • Glaister Family (Mesa Creek) • Kendall Ranch Gary Conrad • Wildman Family (Towaw Cattle Co.) 1980 Red Round-Up Sale Keith Pettyjohn • Michael Rogers (Rogers Red Angus) Grand Champion Bull 2 Many of the first purebred Red Angus breeders came from a commercial cattle background. As such, they were performance oriented. Long before EPDs entered the picture, many of these herds were enrolled in the Canadian Record of Performance program. From this, bull tests evolved, with the Red Angus Breeders of Canada bull test and sale, based out of Millarville, AB, enjoying much success for several years. The Red bulls were very popular and many breeders held their own bull sales for years and continue to this day. 1982 Stockade Round-Up This year, 2017, marks the 45th Red Roundup Sale, sponsored by the Grand Champion Bull Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society. The first sale was held in Innisfail, Alberta, in 1973 and it is the longest running Angus sale in Alberta. There were 46 lots, averaging $1,408. A decision was made early on to make this a select sale, with breeders opening their herd to the selector. Over the years, this process has resulted in a highly successful sale. For the 40th Anniversary of the Red Roundup, a video presentation was commissioned by the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society to document the history of the group. Founding members were interviewed, where possible, to record their recollections and memories. Because this group 1982 Stockade Round-Up has always had members from across Canada, it could not be a registered Grand Champion Female society. So, in fact, it has no official standing. The Canadian Association has recognized it for a long time, and treated it much the same as a Provincial Association. E The Mackenzie families of Mountainview, Alberta, were one of the first L breeders of Red Angus in Canada. At the famed Calgary Bull Sale in 1971, they A S showed Red Stormalong 3A to Grand Champion honors, and sold him for the high price of $7,200. This was a first for the Red cattle, and marked a change 1982 Red Roundup E L in traditional thinking within the Angus breed. In 1974, Southholm Angus at C Coaldale, Alberta, sold an outcross bull, Red Emulous 69D, for the record A price of $15,000 at the Calgary Bull Sale. The value of a red calf from black N parents, was finally recognized. Outcross Red cattle continue to be of value N to the breed and enhance the genetic base for those breeders that breed PI predominantly Red Angus. E In Canada, throughout the ’60s and ’70s, Red and Black cattle were shown H together. As numbers of breeders and cattle increased, there was interest in T splitting into separate shows. The first Canadian National Red Angus show Red Razor’s Edge 8D, 1994 Canadian Western Agribition was held in Lloydminster in 1982. This was an exciting time for Red breeders Grand Champion Bull as they now had a show to call their own. Within 10 years Red shows were being held at Farmfair, Agribition, and various other Provincial Gold shows across the country. Without the continued good work of the Promotion Society these changes would not have come about. Red Angus breeders quickly became involved in the Canadian Angus Association. Don Mackenzie, Mountainview, AB, served as a director on the board from 1978-1980. Dave Wildman, Sangudo, AB, served two terms on the board, and was the first Red breeder to become President of the association. Red Towaw Annette 123Y & He has been followed by other Red breeders in the Chair including: Barney Red Towaw Matrix 19D, 1994 Creech, Don Mackenzie, Kirk Wildman, Kevin Blair, Corrinne Gibson, David National Champion Female Sibbald, and current President, Brett Wildman. The Red side of the Canadian Angus breed has grown by leaps and bounds over the years with breeders coming from other breeds as well as the commercial sector. Canadian Red Angus are known throughout the world for their quality and have been exported to all corners of the globe. When the Promotion Society was formed 45 years ago, the sole mission was to promote the breed. The mission has been accomplished, and Red Angus are recognized across the country, and have become an integral part Red Ter-Ron Fully Loaded of the Canadian Angus Association. 540R, 2007 Canadian Western Agribition Grand Champion Bull 3 DONOR E L A S E L C A RED COCKBURN CORA 254Z N RED COCKBURN CORA 254Z N 1 I 3/13/2012 CWJ 254Z 1881579 P E LAZY MC BOOM 44R RED CRCC BOOM 100N ACT BW H RED LAZY MC HUSTLE 18T LAZY MC CRISTY 44L 80 RED LAZY MC SMASH 41N RED LAZY MC LARKABA 70R T RED LAZY MC LARKABA 60N ADJ WW RED TER-RON MAMBO 28K RED TER-RON TORNADO 157M RED BLUE SPRUCE LARKABA 157A RED WILBAR CORA 443P ADJ YW RED TOWAW ZAMA 148F RED HEAD CORA 159L RED CUMNOCK CORA 423B BW WW YW MILK CE REA MB HPG 0.5 54 91 30 1.7 -.09 .38 10 Sells Open and Ready for Immediate Transplant Selling One Half Embryo Interest/Possession Negotiable RED COCKBURN ASSASSIN 624D | Son of Lot 1 Red Cockburn Cora 254Z is earning notoriety as one of the most accomplished Red Angus females in North America.
