Most have earned a bachelor’s degree and e have about 3 years of health care experience before their program. c n e r e PA Programs – are approximately 27 months long and include f n classroom and clinical instruction. Before they can practice, a PA o C must pass the PANCE exam and must have graduated from an g accredited program. n i r p S Once a PA passes the PANCE, they can wear the designation A R “PA-C” after their names. To maintain their certification, they must P complete 100 hours of CME every 2 years and pass a recertifying A M exam every 6 years. Alpharetta, GA 30009 Growth in Utilization of APPs Nationwide Monster.com’s report on healthcare jobs between 5/2010 and 4/2011 stated that Nursing was the #1 job listing and Physician Assistants were the #6 job listing e c In a report released in 2010, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that n e between 1995 and 2009, the number of NP’s per primary care physician had r e more than doubled (0.23 to 0.48). As did the number PA’s per primary care f n o physician (0.12 to 0.28) C g This data shows that the combined NP-PA workforce is already three quarters the n i r size of the primary care physician workforce. It is likely to continue as the p S numberof PA’s (83,000) is double its size of 10 years ago and the NP profession is A grown to almost 150,000. R P A A 2011 National Center for Health Statistics report showed that the percentage of M hospital outpatient visits handled by NP’s and PA’s rose from 10% in 2,000 to 15% in 2 1 2008.
