This was Princess Elizabeth’s promise to the British Commonwealth and Empire in a speech that was broadcast on the radio from Cape Town, South Africa, on 21 April 1947, her 21st birthday. For 70 years, Queen Elizabeth II has kept her promise to serve her people and for the majority of those living in Britain and across the Commonwealth today, she is the only monarch they have ever known.
