All who were asso- ciated with the Zeitschrift für die alttestamentliche Wissenschaft, whether as members of the editorial board or as those who have helped by writing for the Zeitschriftenschau or Bücherschau or in other ways, were invited to contribute essays, but some had regretfully to decline because of in- firmity or pressure of other duties. I am indebted to Herr Claus Petersen for his help in editing the volume. Professor Fohrer has edited ZAW since.1960, originally in association with Professors O. Eissfeldt and J. Hempel, and after 1966 on his own. His achievements as editor are well known: the standard of the articles has been maintained at a high level; the international character of the journal has been strongly emphasized; the Zeitschriftenschau and Bücherschau have been further developed and are a valued tool of Old Testament scholars. The number of works included in the Beihefte has grown considerably, and they include some that are of great importance for biblical studies. Despite the time and energy that the editorship of ZAW has demanded, Professor Fohrer has made other substantial contributions to Old Testament scholarship. Many pupils have studied at his feet, and many dissertations have been prepared under his supervision. He has also managed to write numerous books and articles, and the list of publications later in this volume is one that might have seemed scarcely possible even for a scholar without his editorial duties. They include standard works on different aspects of the books of the Old Testament, and on the religion and history of Israel, and some of his writings have helped to change the direc- tion of Old Testament studies in recent years. While his publications cover most aspects of the Old Testament, it is perhaps to the study of the prophets that he has made his most substantial contribution. It has, there- fore, been thought appropriate that this volume in his honour should be concerned with Old Testament prophecy. The contributors to this book, together with his other colleagues and friends, express their thanks to him for his many and varied contributions to the study of the Old Testament. They wish him a long and happy retirement. J. A. Emerton Contents Preface V Μ. J. Buss: The social psychology of prophecy 1 J. A. Buss (Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia) The appropriate use of science in theology — including biblical study — is one the crucial issues of the present day. By the end of the nineteenth century, historical criticism had provided a new view of biblical literature which will probably remain an integral part of biblical scholarship. Nevertheless, that procedure was one-sided, so that many attempts have been made to transcend the limitations — especially the par- ticularism — of historical criticism. In most disciplines, newer movements turned toward science1. A weakness of twentieth-century theology lies in its lack of adequate participation in this turn. Although it is not altogether easy to define the term »science«, or the somewhat broader German term »Wissenschaft«, two characteristics of what is designated are especially important: attention to data (a feature shared with historical study), and a concern with generality (not just the particular for its own sake). Scientific and historical concerns do not ex- clude each other in a given discipline. On the contrary, physics, geology, and biology include a very strong historical dimension. The same holds true for the social sciences, when adequately pursued. Similarly, the humanities need to take account of general considerations. In all realms, specific features can be examined in the light of processes shared with other phenomena. Skepticism toward the use of science in theology appears to be based in large part on a belief that the scientific approach undermines faith, just as historical criticism has been thought to do. According to some theorists the truth of biblical faith is supported by its peculiarity i.e., by its not being subject to general categories2. Indeed, if biblical events or beliefs can 1 E.g., ca. 1885, interest within the study of music moved from music history to »Musik- wissenschaft«, with attention to ethnology, psychology, physiology, and acoustics (T. Georgiades, RGG, IV 19633, 1224f.). M. Buss, Understanding Communication, in: M. Buss, ed., Encounter with the Text, 1979, e.g., 3. 32, points out that the over-all shift is connected with concerns for general social welfare. 2 E.g., O. Eichrodt, JBL 65 (1946), 211—213, and holding that »the Israelite mutation, which made the particular and peculiar evolution of Biblical faith a possibility« represents »a radical revolution, as
