PREFACE The bibi iography includes papers in alI fields of photosynthesis research - from stu dies of model biochemical and biophysical systems of the photosynthesis mechanismto primary production studied by the so-caIled growth analysis. In addition to papers devoted entirel y to photosynthesis, papers on other topics are included if they con tain data on photosynthetic activity, photorespiration, chloroplast structure, chlo rophylland carotenoid synthesis and destruction, eta., or if they contain valuable methodological information (measurement of selected environmentaI factars, leaf area, eta.). In many branches it has been difficult to defi ne the limits of interest for photosynthesis researchers. This problem has arisen e.g. in topics deal ing with the transfer of gases, where - in addition to the papers on carbon dioxide transfer - so me papers on water vapour transfer are included, these being of general appl ication or bringing newapproaches. On the other hand, many papers deal ing with the anatomy and physiology of stomata have been omitted, if the aspect of carbon dioxide or water vapour exchange has not been discussed. This volumecontains references to papers published in the year 1981, and simi larly to preceding volumes also addenda including references published in the preceding period (i.e. 1966 to 1980). The numbers of these additional references are labelied with an asterisk (*) in the Iist of references. To maximize the value of the bibi iography the references are arranged alpha betical Iy by authors' names, and each volume is provided with three indexes. The Authors' Index contains al I names of authors, co-authors and editors. The SUbject Index covers primary items chosen according to their interest for photosynthesis re searchers. Starting with Vol.6, the Subject Index has been newly arranged and enlar ged. It contains more detai Is on the electron transport chain, carbon fixation path ways, gas exchange on leaf and canopy level, eta., and also on internal and environ mental factors affecting photosynthesis and related processes. In the Plant Index, the most important crop plants and selected plant types and groups are indexed. Cumulative indexes accompany Volumes 1, 5, and then every fifth volume, i.e. Volumes 10, 15, eta. We have tried to cover fulIy the relevant papers which have appeared in the most important scientific periodicals and books. Articles published in local journals, mimeographed booklets, eta., were chosen mostly from reprints and Iists of publica tions received directly fromthe authors. Only abstracts published in regular jour nals were included. Since some 4000 relevant papers are currently published every year and in cluded in this bibiiography, and since almest al leitations have been checked with the originals, col lecting and preparing for publ ication of such a large amount of material would have been impossible without the col laboration of the authors of the relevant publications. The courtesy of those authors who have already suppl ied us with reprints is highly appreciated. We acknowledge with thanks the cooperation of our colleagues fromthe Insti tute of Experimental Bota~y of the Czecboslovak 8cademy of Sciences LnPrague, espe cialIy Mrs. LUDMILA HAvOVA, Mrs. JIND~ISKA SRBOVA and Mrs. LENKA KOLCABovAwho help ed in preparing the card material. The Iibrarian of our Institute, Mrs. ZORA ZAWOYSKA helped us with checking the references. Dr. Z. ~ESTAK and Dr. J. They are numbered and these numbers are used in the Indexes. In case of a book title, the number Is preceded by B. An asterisk (*) precedlng the number denotes the reference published In the precedlng period (1966 - 1979). The references contain the original unshortened title of the paper (book). English, French and German titles are cited in the original languague. Tltles in other lan guagues are supplemented with a transiation in English (sometimes uslng the title of the respective English abstract or a shortened title with omitted deadweight words). Titles of Japanese, Chinese, eta. papers are given in English translation only. The journals' names are abbreviated mainly according to the "Style Manual for Biological Journals" (2na Ed., Amer.
