Our first chapter offers a tantalizing look at the future of Photoshop, examining the new image manipulation features on offer in Photoshop 7. Never before has it been so easy to make sophisticated changes to an image, whether it's reality or creativity you're after. However, every other project in the book is compatible with Photoshop 6, and, to a large extent, versions as early as 5. Our authors variously use PCs and Macs, so we have kept screenshots in alignment with the system they used. In the text, we have made sure that both Mac and PC commands have been supplied. Preface [Pre-face] A leading Photoshop professional recently said to us that no-one, not even he, could know all there is to know about Photoshop. It's just too various, too broad, too sensi tive to be able to absorb it in full. There is always another trick to learn. Always anoth er method. The real talent is in approaching it in a way that appeals to you, and then taking it on yourself and pushing it as far as you can. The idea behind this book is to offer you a series of strictly limited canvases, which have been taken by some of the finest designers around and pushed into new realms. The limits we chose were those of everyone's favorite image: the face. The resulting collection of work is an explosion of ideas, technique and interpretation. In these few chapters we have the broadest imaginable cross-section of styles. We have photorealistic techniques. We have face painting, oil painting, screen-printing, and mixed media. We dabble with hyper-reality, surreality. fantasy, romance, New Romance, horror, tension and serenity. From a collection of everyday faces, we have generated a cast of entirely digital characters - clowns, tigers, glamour pusses, angels, demons, rock stars, monsters, and ghosts. With suggestions and tips coming from the authors, together with many in-depth tuto rials, you will come away from this book bursting with ideas, and equipped with the knowledge of how to coax the subtlest expression out of Photoshop.
