PATCO journal Pennsylvania Area Token Collectors Organization Volume 29 - Issue 1 In this issue: “Not a Stocking Company” by Rich Bottles Jr. “Unlisted PA Merchant Tokens (part 13)” by Larry Dziubek (Starting with Volume 23-Issue 1, an attempt is being made by PATCO members to build a list of tokens not known when the PA tome was published. We try to follow the example of Dr. Aqua, but stray from the strict standards. There are some storecards included that are not issued by pure merchants. Food Stamp tokens are not included, but we are compiling a separate list of them and need your help. Some, but not all plastic tokens, are included herein. New Independent Brewing Co. varieties are not entered into this list, but are maintained in our database. Some entries are incomplete, because only partial data was provided in eBay sales or retail listings. You are invited to add or correct any of this information if you have seen the actual token. Write to Larry Dziubek.) (Is this maverick from Lykens, Stockertown, Williamstown, Easton, Shamokin or Olyphant?) Club Information The annual dues payment of $5 in the Pennsylvania Area Token Collectors Organization (PATCO.; entitles members to receive the twice-yearly PATCO Journal and to submit a free 30-word classified ad for each issue* The goal of this organization is not to limit itself to the exonumia and collectibles of Pennsylvania, but to explore the more diverse collecting interests of its members* To achieve this goal, members are urged to submit articles on subjects that interest them* When using original material from this newsletter for re-publication, it is requested that acknowledgment be given to the author and the PATCO Journal* Views expressed in the PATCO Journal are those of the respective authors, and not necessarily of the club in general* Not a Stocking Company By Rich Bottles Jr. VolunteerFire Companies and Liberty just seem to go well together, which is why fire companies organized in the late 1880s and early 1900s liked to name their outfits “Liberty Hose Co.” And when the volunteers weren’t fighting fires, they liked to socialize, thus many of these fire companies also established Liberty Hose Company Social Clubs. 1) . There are at least four varieties of tokens known from these Liberty Hose Company clubs, including one maverick and three non-mavericks from Pennsylvania. One non-maverick is a 28mm black plastic octagonal token from Lykens, PA: LIBERTY / HOSE. CO. 2 / LYKENS / PA. // GOOD / FOR 10£ IN / TRADE The Borough Council of Lykens voted to organize a fire company in 1885 and subsequently formed a fire department committee. The committee agreed to name the new entity Liberty Hose Co. #1, but changed it to Liberty Hose Co. #2 the following year (it is believed that this numerical name change was because one of the other companies in town, Rescue Hose Company, was already using #1). When the borough built a new municipal building in 1937, membership in the Liberty Hose Co. #2 reached 150. The additional room allowed the company to have an auditorium for business meetings and a basement club room for socializing. By 1951, the company’s membership rolls rose to 200 members and a decision was made to purchase a double block adjacent to the borough building. Subsequently, a new social club opened for business in September of 1952. The following year, there were 250 members, which has remained consistent ever since. 2) . Another variety of non-maverick Liberty Hose Co. trade token from Pennsylvania is also plastic and octagonal, and known in dark blue and light blue colors (Unlisted in Aqua): LIBERTY / HOSE CO. / STOCKERTOWN / PA // GOOD / FOR 25*f IN / TRADE The Liberty Hose Fire Company #1 of Stockertown, PA, was formed in 1922, although the borough didn't buy its first fire truck until 1925. In 1952, the Liberty Hose Fire Co. #1 built a Memorial Hall to honor the veterans o'f World War II. On the main floor, the Ladies Auxiliary of Liberty Hose Company served dinners in the banquet hall for various community and private events; but the real fun took place in the basement where the volunteer firefighters ran a bar. In 1963, the members of the Liberty Hose Company created the Memorial Hall Association to separate the fire department from the social club. The Liberty Hose Fire Company was dissolved in 2006. 3) . The Borough of Williamstown tried three times (1893, 1899 and 1901) to organize the Liberty Hose Co. #1, eventually approving by-laws on July 8, 1901. Not much else is known about the origin of the fire company or the social club, but the Liberty Hose Co. #1 of Williamstown currently has a Facebook page. The web page is short on history, but describes itself as a Fire Station - Social Club - Bar & Grill, and urges visitors "Don’t forget to check-in when you come to the canteen." It is also known as a prolific issuer of round 31mm plastic trade tokens: LIBERTY/HOSE CO. /#1 / WILLIAMSTOWN// GOOD FOR/15^ /IN TRADE (blue) LIBERTY / HOSE CO. / #1 / WILLIAMSTOWN // GOOD FOR / 35£ / IN TRADE (red) LIBERTY / HOSE CO. / #1 / WILLIAMSTOWN / PA. // GOOD FOR / / IN TRADE (areen) LIBERTY / HOSE CO. / #1 / WILLIAMSTOWN / PA. // GOOD FOR / 40£ / IN TRADE (white) LIBERTY / HOSE CO. #1 / WILLIAMSTOWN / PA. // GOOD FOR / 40,d / IN TRADE (white) 4) . The maverick token is round, aluminum and measures 20mm. Is it from Lykens, Stockertown, Williamstown or some other locale? Easton, Shamokin and Olyphant are other Pennsylvania towns that have had Liberty Hose Companies; or is the maverick from outside of PA? The low denomination and aluminum composition indicates that the maverick is much older than the plastic tokens: LIBERTY / HOSE CO. / No 2 // GOOD FOR / 2 / IN TRADE.
