ThefirsteditionoftheOGSEditorialGuidewastheresultofalengthyseriesofeditorialmeetingsheldin1989,andwas (cid:147)published(cid:148)inSeptemberofthatyear.ItwasoriginallyintendedonlyasacomprehensivehandbookforPublicationSer- viceseditors.However,thelevelofauthorinterestinitscontents,evenbeforeitwascompleted,promptedustomakethe guideavailabletoallinterestedstaffwithintheMinesandMineralsDivision.Wemerelyaskedthatauthorsignorethose partswhichpertainedonlytotheeditingofreportsandmaps. Weaskedforcommentsonthecontentandformatofthefirsteditionandwerepleasedthatanumberofpeopletookthe timetopreparethoughtfulcommentsandsuggestionsforimprovement.Allwerediscussed,andasmanyaspossible wereincorporatedintothesecondedition,whichwasreleasedinSeptember1990.Athirdedition,withoutappendixes, wasreleasedinJuly1995. Wehavebeencollectingcommentsfromeditors,bothinternalandcontract,andfromOGSstaffduringthepast5‰years. Withthenewdigitalmappingstandardsandmanuscriptsubmissionstandardsfinalized,andthetransitiontodigitalpro- ductionandon-demandreproductioncompleted,itisanappropriatetimetoupdatetheOGSEditorialGuidewithanew editionthatshouldseeusintothenextmillennium.Aswasthecasewithitspredecessors,allaspectsofthisnewedition havebeendiscussedandapprovedbytheOGSPublicationsWorkingGroup. Reference Sources InordertoprovideconsistencyinthepublicationsoftheOGS,allauthors(fromthevarioussections)andeditors(in Publication Services), must use the same reference sources for spelling, hyphenation and grammar.
