Elytra,Tokyo,35(1):21-26,May30,2007 Occurrenceof aNewCaveSpeciesofJujiroa (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Platyninae) fromCentralSichuan,Southwest China Shun-lobi UENo DepartmentofZoology,NationalScienceMuseum(Nat.Hist) 3-23-1Hyakunin-cho,Shinjuku,Tokyo,169-0073Japan Abstract Anewcavespeciesof theplatyninegenusJuJiroaisdescribedfroma conglomeratecaveincentralSichuan,SouthwestChina,andisnamedJuJiroasato1to thememoryofthelateDr.MasatakaSAT0. Itisapeculiarspecies, isolatedfromthe othercongenersby lackingdorsalandpreapica1poreson theelytra andmodified protarsomeresinthemale. TheplatyninegenusJujiroahas ratherawiderangeof distribution inEast Asia. MorethanthirtyspeciesofthegenushavehithertobeenknownfromCentralandWest Japan (cf.SAsAKAwA, 2006), Taiwan (U直NO&SAIT0, l991),MainlandChinaand NorthVietnam(cf.DEUvE,2004). InMainlandChina, thesesubterraneanplatynines areextremelyrareandtheiroccurrenceisquitesporadica1, all thefourspecieshitherto describedhavingbeen known fromonlysinglespecimens(JEDLIOKA, l961,pp.177, 218-219,fig44;VIGNATAGLIANTI,1995,p.180,figs.1-3;U直NO&KISHIMOT0,2001, 31, figs. l-3; DEuvE,2004,p 362, fig. 1). Thougha fewadditionalspecieswere p discoveredinSichuaninthepastthreeyears, theyremainundescribeduntilnowdueto inadequacyof availablespecimens. In themiddleautumnof2006, I hadanopportunitytovisit apeculiar limestone cave located in central Sichuan. This cave, called Longmen Dong, is a long one developedinconglomeratelyingnearthetopofalowhill, andhaslongbeenwellknown tolocalpeopleasashowcavethoughneverexaminedbycavebiologists. Itisrelatively dryfor themostpart, buttherearewetplacesfedbytrickles. Ataturningpointofthe touristroute, thereisapavedreststationwithchairsanddustbins, thelatterofwhich contained leftoversof lunches, confectioneriesand juicebottles, formingappropriate attractor forsubterraneananimals. All thecavernicolesof interest, includingJujiroa, Quedius, eyelesslithobiidcentipede, andsoon, werefoundinoraroundthosedustbins. ThreespecimensofJziJlroawerefound fromunder them. Afteracloseexamination, itbecameapparent that theplatyninewasconsiderably different fromothercongeners, thoughlookingsimilar ingeneralappearancetotypical Chineseforms. Itbelongstoanisolatednewspeciesbeyondalldoubt, andisdescribed inthepresentpapertothememoryofthelateDr.MasatakaSAT0(1937-2006). Having beenaleadingcoleoptero1ogistspecializinginaquaticbeetles,SAT0hadawideinterest 22 Shun-lobi UtNo in various insects including those living in caves, and served as a council of the Speleological SocietyofJapan for alongtime. He was averygoodpartner inmy biologicalinvestigationsofChinesecaves.TogetherweexploredmanycavesinSichuan, Shaanxi, Hubei, Guizhou and Guangxi, always looking for cavebeetles and often achievinggoodresults. Besidestrechinebeetles, wediscoveredJuJlroainSichuan, which remain undescribed until nowsincewehavebeen unable to obtainsufficient material. Insteadofdedicatingthosespecies,I wouldliketonameafterhimanother remarkable speciesonthebasisofpluralspecimens, forthefirst timeforChineseJujiroa.
