Dr Milind Kokje Chief Editor unanimous in concluding that Clean Label is in vogue and indeed, gaining more acceptance. A company's profit and Clean Label seem to go hand-in-hand, concludes a recent study, apart from the obvious value addition for the consumer. Clean label products are free of artificial chemicals, contaminants and additives. They are minimally processed, with a minimum number of ingredients which are easy to understand, without preservatives, emulsifiers and flavouring agents. All information is displayed in an easy to read and simple structure, allowing consumers to make an informed decision. Ingredion EMEA, a leading ingredient solution provider, conducted a global study to explore the potential of the clean label. It said that 58 per cent of the respondents showed an increase in their revenues after adopting clean label. This factor is significant since it establishes a direct positive correlation between the clean label and revenue growth which would encourage food producers to turn towards more clean label products. The survey shows that over 50 per cent product portfolios are already converted to clean label foods. More such products are getting added to the product baskets taking the percentages even higher with several companies determined to add nearly 15 per cent more of clean label products in the next couple of years or so. Ingredion claims that it has identified the right food formulations, needed to grow the business and profits. This will help companies develop new clean label products that will catch on. There's clearly a growing band of health conscious folks, preferring natural over processed offerings. Though the aspiration for a healthy lifestyle is pushing demand for clean label food formulations, the surveyed companies feel that still there are three key barriers to its popularity. They are cost, shelf life and lack of formulation expertise. Of these, the third challenge can be resolved by developing expertise by introducing courses for formulations. Even the challenge of shelf life can be tackled by research. Even otherwise, in the food industry, the challenge of shelf life always exists N umerous studies conducted worldwide are Emerging Clean Label Statement for several types of foods. However, the cost could bea real barrier and it will keep increasing as the clean label products would become popular with growing demand for the ingredients. Increasing the production of natural ingredients is the only solution to overcome the cost challenge. That would require long term planning. When it comes to India, growing natural ingredients is not a problem as the country is known for its herbs and over 5000-year-old plant-based system of medicines of Ayurveda. By setting up a separate ministry of AYUSH, Ayurveda and other local traditional systems of medicines have received a well deserved boost. Several of those herbs and other ingredients can be used for development of clean label food formulations. What it will require is a lot of research. Like elsewhere in the world, in India too consumers’ concerns are the ingredients of the packaged food and the way food products are made. In its first clean label report on Indian packaged food in November 2021, LabelBlind, a nutritech firm, revealed that nutrition information ranks above brand trust. Still, it is at the third position, first two being taste and price in consumer choices. There is growing consideration for clean label attributes like natural, non-artificial ingredients and even eco-friendly packaging and it is ahead of claims like fat-free, low sugar and zero calorie, the report said. Clean label, apparently, does not have any regulatory definition in India. The food regulator too will have to gear up to meet the regulatory demands the clean label foods will create. Such clean label foods may come from even abroad to the Indian market and the regulator's approval will be needed for that. After all, growing health concerns translating into healthy diet choices, like the clean label formulations, is opening immense opportunities globally and every stakeholder will need to get ready to grow demand and avoid false claims. Sustainability has become a growing trend in the food and beverage (F&B) industry right now. The need for sustainability has turned critical in the food business. Not only is the F&B industry at risk from climate change, the food system is also a major contributor to climate change in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. A sustainability strategy is crucial for FB companies, to maintain business continuity and remain competitive into the future. All segments across the F&B sector be it packaging, production, sourcing, turning vegan or reducing food wastage, are moving in this direction. Sustainability is no longer perceived merely as an aspect of corporate social responsibility, instead it has taken on a critical function of the business, influencing prioritisation of investments. The main focus of both organisations is to advocate consumer health and food safety. Studies g show that over 71 per cent consumers are likely to make a purchase based on social media referrals rather than the science behind the product. The pandemic has deeply impacted food consumption habits and made the consumer want to learn more about what they eat. ICMR-NIN and IFBA plan to jointly conduct webinars and regional workshops aimed at helping consumers understand the science behind food consumption for better health. Together both organisations will make efforts to enhance awareness about the importance of nutrition, food processing and food safety, to help consumers make informed food choices. Essential aspects like relevance of a balanced diet, consumer perception about food safety, the impact of consumption patterns on health, reading and understanding food labels are a few of the key issues that will be highlighted. IFBA will continue to engage with its members to develop healthy and nutritious food products in compliance with current Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) and dietary guidelines for different demographic groups. Govt to roll out programmes to popularise nutri-cereals The government of India (Gol), plans to hold several programmes across the country and abroad, to popularise millets and other nutri- cereals. In this mission, all ministries and departments of the Gol along with the state governments, will collectively promote the nutri- cereals in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DA&FW) and Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE). This was announced by the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar, as he chaired the meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, on the subject- ‘International Year of Millets’ India’s action plan for the International Year of Millets (IYOM)- 2023 focuses on strategies to enhance production, consumption, export, branding etc. The government has also launched the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, for promotion of millets. The government has evolved the ‘Seven Sutras’ (themes) in the run- up to the lYOM, which will be rolled out by the concerned Ministry/ Departments. Over 500 startups are working in the millet value chain, while the Indian Institute on Millet Research, has incubated 250 startups under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana - Remunerative Approaches for Agriculture and Allied Sectors Rejuvenation (RKVY- RAFTAAR). More than Rs 6.2 crore has been disbursed to over 66 startups while about 25 startups have been approved for further funding. 5 = Ayush Ministry approves new herbal drug for mild to moderate COVID-19 therapy The Interdisciplinary Technical Review Committee (ITRC) of the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, has approved Bengaluru- based Sri Sri Tattva’s NAOQ19 as an add-on therapy for mild to moderate COVID-19 infection after reviewing the double- blind, randomised controlled trials conducted at some of the prestigious institutes like AlIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Rishikesh and GIMS Noida. NAOQ19 is a polyherbal formulation with a blend of 13 powerful herbs and their extracts which helps to enhance and strengthen the immune system. It also helps in conditions like fever, cold & cough, respiratory disorders and inflammatory conditions. Sri Sri Tattva partnered with Sri Sri Institute of Advanced Research (SSIAR) to conduct pilot trials on the efficacy of NAOQ19, along with standard of care, in treating mild to moderate COVID-19 infection. The first preclinical studies (In vitro and In vivo studies) were conducted at Foundation of Neglected Diseases and Research (FNDR), Bengaluru. The results were found to be encouraging, which prompted them to conduct clinical trials on a larger scale with some of the most renowned institutes of the country. These findings were then presented to the Interdisciplinary Technical Review Committee (ITRC), which is set up by the Ministry of AYUSH, to review and approve drug trials on COVID-19 patients. im MoWCD issues guidelines of Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 The Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD) has issued operational guidelines to implement an Integrated Nutrition Support Programme called ‘Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0" The scheme has been approved by the Government of India for implementation during the 15th Finance Commission period 2021-22 to 2025-26. This Integrated Nutrition Support Programme seeks to address the challenges of malnutrition in children, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers through a strategic shift in nutrition content and delivery. It will also create a convergent ecosystem, to develop and promote practices that nurture health, wellness and immunity. The existing scheme components have been reorganised under Poshan 2.0, with a view to address various gaps and shortcomings in the ongoing nutrition programme and to improve implementation as well as to accelerate improvement in nutrition and child development outcomes. e Food regulator seizes e e 27500 Lt of loose edible oil e e e during inspection The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has concluded the nation-wide campaign against adulteration in edible oils (single oil as a constituent), trans-fatty acids and sale of multi source edible oils without proper labelling. This massive surveillance drive was carried out between August 1 and August 14, 2022 across the country with a total of 4431 surveillance samples of vegetable oils, multi-source edible oils, vanaspati etc., across 35 States/ UTs. The Commissioners of Food Safety in all States/UTs were directed to lift surveillance samples of these products in a staggered manner from the markets so that the sample base is wider and representative of all Food Business Operators (FBOs)/ brands being sold therein. Further, as a specific focus of the campaign to check sale of loose oil in the country, a huge quality of loose edible oil i.e., more than 27,500 litres has been seized across the country on the spot during the course of inspection. The samples have been sent to accredited food testing laboratories for swift analysis. Any suspected case of adulteration shall be followed by immediate drawing of regulatory samples to take legal action against such FBOs as per the provisions of FSS Act, 2006 and Rules/Regulations made thereunder. Indo-Israel Centre of Excellence for Vegetables to come up in UP The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar, laid the foundation stone of the Indo-Israel Centre of Excellence for Vegetables in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh (UP). The technology for the centre is provided by Israeli experts under the India-lsrael Action Plan (IIAP) with funds for building infrastructure for demonstration purposes coming from the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for the holistic growth of the horticulture sector. Similar Centres of Excellence (CoEs) are being set up in the different states based on Israeli technologies.
