SHORT COMMUNICATIONS : BULL. BOT. SURV. INDlA VOL. 44 (1 -4) : 2002 153 NEW DISTRIBUTIONAL RECORD OF DRIMIA RAZZZ ANSARI (LILIACEAE) FROM MAHARASHTRA P. TETALI, *P. LAKSHMINARASIMHAN, *P.V. PRASANNA AND SUJATA TETALI Naoroji Godrej Centre for PIant Research; Shindewadi, Shirwal, Maharashtra 4 12 801 INTRODUCTION While collecting plants from different localities of North Western Ghats of Maharashtra, a Liliaceae member was collected on 15.6.1998 from Khambatakki Ghat area, near Khandala in Satara district (P. Tetali 3 12-3 13-NGCPR). On identification, it was found to be Drimia razii Ansari, an endemic and threatened taxon. Scanning of literature revealed that D. razii was first described by Ansari in 1981 , based on the collections made in 1970 from Dive Ghat, in Pune district. Since then this taxon has not been reported to occur in any locality other than type locality. The species was found growing on exposed rocky areas and gravelly hill slopes. Its distribution is also fragmented. This endemic taxon has been assigned the status of Rare category and has been listed in Red Data Book (Nayar & Sastry, 1988). Singh & Karthikeyan (2000) and Mishra & Singh (2001) have listed this species as Critically Endangered. The present collection from Satara district forms an added distributional data. A detailed description and line drawing of this endemic taxon is given here to facilitate easy identification in field and to locate this species from other areas of Western Ghats.
