In the last few years, since the appointment of Professor John M. Fossey as Curator of Archaeology, the section of Mediterranean Archaeology has undergone considerable development with new acquisitions, long-term loans and re-assessment of the previously existing material. The first tangible result was the opening in Feb- ruary 2004 of a new gallery of specifically Mediterranean Archaeology simultaneously with the opening of a visiting exhibition in the same field “Tanagra, the small world of clay”. Develop- ments have proceeded at such a rate that a new version of the gallery is currently in planning for the immediate future. For a long time before these recent developments, however, the collection of ancient glass was a principal focus within the Mediterranean Archaeology collection and it is ap- propriate that the first volume of the catalogues raisonnés should focus on this. In all his work at the museum since Autumn 2000 John Fossey has been able to gather around him colleagues and friends with various specialities within the broader field of the ancient Medi- terranean. The two co-authors of this volume are excellent examples of this approach. Dr. Beau- doin Caron was, many years ago, briefly a student of John’s and has been his colleague and close collaborator for a decade while teaching Classical Archaeology at the Université de Montréal. The late Mme Eléni P. Zoïtopoúlou was John’s wife, a professional archaeologist herself, who served as consultant in Mediterranean Archaeology since her husband’s appointment to the museum. Eléni died shortly before the final touches were put to the book but, with the help of Beaudoin Caron, John has been able to bring the work to completion in the MGR series of which he is the Editor- in-Chief. For John Fossey the completion of this volume has been an important testimonial to the work of his late wife. At the museum we all rejoice in the appearance of this memorial to our lost col- league and we look forward to the appearance of further volumes in the series, in some of which we shall undoubtedly see incorporated notes and information which she contributed over the years to the files for which her husband is responsible. In this way her work will always be with us, in a form which would surely have given her much personal satisfaction and pleasure. Nathalie Bondil Directrice Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal ccaarroonn__vvrrww..iinndddd vviiiiii 1199--33--22000088 88::2200::3399 foreword ix FOREWORD The Montréal Museum of Fine Arts has long had a collection of Mediterranean Antiquities but, without a professional archaeologist to curate it, this collection’s development was somewhat spo- radic, the product of occasional, sometimes quite important donations and of other acquisitions by purchase when a particularly interesting opportunity presented itself. When appointed in 2000 as the very first Curator of Archaeology at the Museum I had two principal intentions where the permanent collection was concerned: to make available to the public both by exhibition and by publication the existing collection and to enrich it as far as might be consistent with international legal instruments and national legislations. These were, of course, two of the fundamental parts of the mandate that the Museum and its then Director, Dr. Guy Cogeval, gave me. It was soon evident that a particular focus of the permanent collection was its holdings in ancient glass. Accordingly from the very start of my time at the Museum, my late wife (Eléni P. Zoïtopoúlou), herself a specialist in Greek and Roman Archaeology, undertook the study of this glass collection and recommended important related bibliographic material for addition to the Mu- seum’s library. When she was already many months advanced on this project we learned that our colleague, Dr. Beaudoin Caron, now teaching Classical Archaeology at the Université de Montréal, had some years earlier, as part of his graduate studies in museology, drawn up a draft catalogue of a good part of the collection. It was obvious that the two efforts should be combined and accord- ingly we began to work together as a team, to which was added Renée Bouchard, then a student at Concordia University and now a doctoral student at the Université de Montréal; her drafting skills produced the drawings necessary to illustrate some of the more ornate pieces in the glass collec- tion. It was a more than happy coincidence that Renée was working on Romano-British glass for her own thesis subject. The four of us, in different combinations and on different occasions, thus spent many hours during the summer of 2002 re-recording and drawing the material presented in this volume. To the pieces already covered in Beaudoin Caron’s preliminary catalogue we were able to add others that had been separately inventoried and yet others that had come from recent donations. The catalogue here published thus contains all the Museum’s holdings up to late 2004; it must, however, be noted that we have not considered the Museum’s Islamic glass objects as be- longing in the category of “ancient”. Clearly Beaudoin Caron, an internationally recognized scholar in the field of ancient glass stud- ies, has been the driving force behind the whole project and the rest of us have learned much from him during our working sessions and subsequent discussions. It is also thanks to his efforts that the expenses of completing the photographic cover of the material were underwritten by a grant from his institution, the Université de Montréal (Faculté des Arts et des Sciences), to which we express our warmest thanks. It is also Beaudoin Caron who has kept me going with this project in the months following my wife’s premature death; she would be happy to know that the work was completed but did not live long enough to see it although only months before her death, while already in hospital, she was reading and correcting whole parts of the catalogue text. After the grant from the Université de Montréal was obtained the photographing and printing was carried out by Christine Guest and we are grateful to her and the other colleagues in the Mu- seum’s photographic service for their constant interest in our project and their ever-ready collab- ccaarroonn__vvrrww..iinndddd iixx 1111--33--22000088 1122::0033::5511
