It is devoted to the recording, summarizing, and indexing of the relevant publications throughout the world. Astronomy and Astrophysics Ab stracts is prepared by a special department of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut in close cooperation with the FachinJormationszentrum Karlsruhe. The work is done under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. Volume 54 records literature published in 1991 and received before 30 April 1992. Some older documents which we received late and which are not surveyed in earlier volumes are included too. The input work was shared between the Fachinforma tionszentrum Karlsruhe and the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut. We thank our Karlsruhe colleagues Ms. Ingrid Ernst and Mr. Wolfgang Luck for their willing and effective cooperation. We acknowledge with thanks contributions from our colleagues all over the world. Last but not least we express our gratitude to all the organizations, observatories, and publishers that provide us with complimentary copies of their publications. The recording process and corrections were carried out by our technical staff members Ms. Helga Ballmann, Ms. Monika Kohl, and Ms. Sylvia Matyssek. It is a pleasure to thank them all for their diligence. Heidelberg, July 1992 The Editors Contents Introduction . . . . . . . . . . .
