According to the Montana Almanac, by authors Andrea Merrill and Judy Jacobson, the county was established in 1893 and named for Jesuit Mission- ary Father Anthony Ravalli who located to the region in 1845. Hamilton replaced Stevensville as the county seat in 1898, according to the authors, and most likely is named after early pioneer J. W. Hamilton.
