Helena, the county seat, is the state's fifth largest city with a population of24,609. The city is located at the junction of Interstate 15 and U.S. Highways 12 and 287, halfway between Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. Nicknamed the "Queen City ofthe Rockies," Helena is a major cultural and recreational area. According to the U.S. Bureau ofthe Census, median income for Lewis and Clark County households in 1989 was $26,409. The county is 3,497.6 square miles in area; 3,461 square miles in land area and 36.6 in inland water area. County residents experience the four distinct seasons. Aver- age monthly temperatures, for example in Helena, range from 1 9.6 degrees above in January to 69.2 above in July. The annual average precipitation is 1 1 .37 inches and snowfall 47.6 inches.
