In the 19th century the cheetah populated probably all the territory of the Algerian Sahara. In the 20th century it was recorded regularly in the mountains of Central Sahara, where it is present until today. It also appeared sometimes along the western border of Algeria reaching the Saharan Atlas to the north. Reported sightings of this period are resumed in a map.
