Train station in Zvekovica, Croatia. Above around 1910. Below in 2021. The smaller building in front of the larger station building was removed many years ago. The sign on the old station reads “Cavtat - Ragusavecchia”. Caviat Is the nearest large town; Ragusavecchia Is the Italian name for Caviat. It means “Old Ragusa” and Ragusa is the Italian name for Dubrovnik. Caviat predates Dubrovnik. When the Slavs “came over the hill” (invaded) around 650 A.D, the residents of Cavtat took retuge in a safer, unpopulated area that eventually became Old Town, Dubrovnik. Cavtat then ‘stood abandonded for many years. ‘The house and Konobe of the Rade family of Zvekovica, Croatia. Above around 1910. Below as a ruin in 2021. The building was built in the 1880s by Petar Rage (1841-1916) of Stravéa. ‘This was one of the first buildings in Zvekovica. Petar's daughter, Marija (1889-1973) was bom here, and emigrated to Watsonville, CA, where she married John Sapro in 1913. The above photo comes from Marija's granddaughter, Fran Saveria Dobler of Watsonville. Main Street in Cavtat, Croatia. Above in 1908. Below in 2021. Today the post office is located in the right-hand part of this building. Peter Scurich (1876-1956), born in Cilipi as Pero Skutié, is 2nd from right in western dress. He immigrated to Watsonville, CA, in 1900, and returned to Konavle for a visit in 1908, when this photo was taken.
