TABLE OF CONTENTS THE KARNER FAMILY 1 THE KARNER AND VAN GILDER FAMILIES 15 THE KARNER - VAN GUILDER FAMILIES 27 GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY 43 APPENDIX 49 INDEX OF PERSONS 55 111 . , INTRODUCTION Joseph Mitchell^ Kellogg (Lyman Beecher^O, Hiraiti^, Horace^ LooTtiis^, Stephen^, Stephen^, Stephen'^, Joseph^, Martin^, Phi- lippe^) was born in Emporia, Kansas, September 26, 1885, and was a graduate of Cornell University. Our sole biography of him indicates only that in 1937 he was unmarried, and a Professor of Architectural Design at the University of Kansas, and Head of its Department of Agriculture. Many of his genealogical works are in the collection of the Local History Department of the Berkshire Athenaeum in Pitts- field, Massachusetts. His compilations of Sheffield [Mass.] Vital and Cemetery Records, Egremont [Mass.] Cemetery Records, as well as material concerning the Kellogg family have long been an integral part of the collection. This book represents the contents of four notebook manu- scripts of material [also part of the Athenaeum collection] which was researched by Mr. Kellogg in 1945. In presenting his work, we have been as faithful as possible to the original in regard to layout, spacing, punctuation, etc. with departures only in the , case of handwritten lines that were too long to fit within ac- ceptable margins. Nothing was edited and no corrections were attempted The maps and signatures appearing in the Appendix are en- hanced tracings from the original documents in the Massachusetts State Archives. Enhancement was necessary in order to present sharp, legible reproductions.
