The Kemtuik language area is located in the northeastern corner of the province of Papua, Indonesia, some 80 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital, Jayapura (see maps below). The language is spoken by approximately 5,000 speakers in 23 villages. Quite a few Kemtuik people live in Jayapura and the surrounding townships. Dialects and neighbouring languages. The Kemtuik language has three dialects. The main dialect, which can be called ‘Kemtuik proper’, is spoken in the villages of Merem and Yanim. The second dialect, ‘Iwalom,’ is spoken in the villages along the road to Genyem: Sabron, Mamda and Meikari. The third dialect is located south of Lake Sentani and called ‘Ikuoy’. The differences between these three dialects are minor and the ‘Kemtuik proper’ vari- ant is considered the model for the whole area. The Kemtuik language is also easily understood by speakers of Gresi (also called Klesi, 3,500 speakers) who live further southwest, as well as by the 500 speakers of Mlap, northwest of the Kemtuik area. The Nimboran language, spoken by 7,500 speakers to the west and the Moi (or Mekwey) language, spoken by 2,500 speakers to the north, also belong to the same language family (also called Nimboran), but they are linguis- tically more remote. Culturally the unity between all these language groups is more pervasive than their differences in language and dialect would suggest. The use of Papuan Malay / Indo- nesian is spreading in the whole area, especially in the vicinity of transmigration settlements and in villages along the main arterial road which connects Genyem to Sentani. Affiliation. Traditionally the small Nimboran language family (of which Kemtuik is a member) was classified as a subgroup of the large Trans-New Guinea family. However, recent research by Malcolm Ross shows that the Nimboran language family is an isolate (Malcolm D. Ross, 2005, ‘Pronouns as a preliminary diagnostic for grouping Papuan languages’ In: Andrew Pawley, Robert Attenborough, Jack Golson and Robin Hide, eds, Papuan Pasts. Cultural, lin- guistic and biological histories of Papuan-speaking peoples, 15-66. Canberra: Pacific Linguis- tics). Because of its small size and its differentiation from surrounding languages such as Sen- tani, Tabla, Orya and Elseng, the Nimboran family is of special interest. History of the dictionary. This dictionary, which contains more than 2,300 entries and hundreds of subentries, has quite a long history. The present compiler started collecting Kemtuik words and phrases in early 1975. Since Kemtuik had never been written, analysis of the sound system had to be done first, the results of which were published in 1975 (see bibliog- raphy). Most of the research was carried out in the village of Merem, which is considered by the people to be the cultural centre of the Kemtuik people. The initial work was done under the auspices of the Summer Institute of Linguistics (now SIL International), in cooperation with Cenderawasih University in Abepura, Papua (then Irian Jaya), Indonesia. On the basis of this analysis a preliminary orthography was established. From that time onwards, words and phrases were continually added to the lexical database, including those from other parts of the Kemtuik area. From 1985 until 2000 new data were added to the collection by Mr. Michael Werner, a field linguist also working with SIL. In 1992 a preliminary Kemtuik vocabulary was published under the title ‘Draft Lexical Field Notes’, containing some 1,800 entries. From 2005 onwards, work on the dictionary was taken up again, not only by expatriate field linguists of SIL, but also by Kemtuik speakers themselves who were trained in principles of lexicogra- v phy and the handling of computer programs. They supplied the example sentences in the dic- tionary, both in Kemtuik and Indonesian. An official orthography for the language was estab- lished in 2007. Triglot version. To make this dictionary as useful as possible, it is published as a triglot with Kemtuik, Indonesian and English. What is here called Indonesian is in fact a mix- ture of the official language Bahasa Indonesia and what has been called Papuan Malay. Papuan Malay, as it is spoken on the North Coast, is an offshoot of Ambonese Malay, mixed with Pap- uan linguistic features, which has been in use since approximately 1850 with the arrival of bird hunters, Ambonese teachers and missionaries in the area. The national language, Bahasa Indo- nesia, was introduced in the province in 1962, and has a growing influence. With the exception of some minor cases, the present compiler has chosen not to ‘improve’ the Papuan Malay to conform to the standard national language, since the dictionary is basically written for the speakers of the Kemtuik language, who are used to this form of Indonesian / Malay. To make this dictionary accessible to non-Indonesian readers as well, English translations of definitions and example sentences have been provided, as well as a brief overview of Kemtuik phonology and some aspects of its grammar. These are mostly summaries of the articles listed in the bibli- ography. The interested reader is referred to these writings for further details. Finally, most entries in the dictionary are illustrated by culturally relevant examples. In this way the reader is able to get something of the flavor of Kemtuik life and thought. Finally, acknowledgements have to be made to Mrs. Ortenci Yaboysembut, Mrs. Yuliana Marasian and Mr. Yacob Bemey. Each of them worked extensively on this dictionary and supplied hundreds of examples. I am also greatly indebted to Mrs. Margaret Hartzler, who checked the English translation against the Indonesian, and to Mrs. Jelly van der Wilden, who trained, guided and motivated the local contributors from 2005-2007. Finally, my thanks are expressed to Dr. René van den Berg, SIL linguistic consultant, who motivated us to continue with the research and to publish this dictionary.
