The green revolution helped to increase the productivity and production of wheat, rice, maize and other crops. The Knowledge Revolution envisaged under Bharat Nirman will however enhance human productivity and creativity in all its dimensions. This is why achieving the goal of Mission 2007 is important for achieving what Mahatma Gandhi emphasized, namely Purna Swaraj. In 2004, 41 organisations representing the various stakeholders in the ICT for development exercise organized jointly a National Alliance for Mission 2007: Every Village a Knowledge Centre. The total number of partners now stand at 128. The National Alliance for Mission 2007 brings together Central and State Government agencies, business and industry, academic institutions, civil society organizations and all interested in bridging the rural-urban digital divide. The National Alliance is supported by an International Support Group chaired by Dr Maxine Olson, Resident Representative of UNDP in New Delhi. The Alliance partners are all committed to the goal of ushering in a knowledge revolution in rural India. Partners Directory - July 2006 7 The Alliance has five working groups dealing with connectivity, content, capacity building, care and management and coordination. Also it is supported by the Jamsetji Tata National Virtual Academy for Rural Prosperity from the point of view of human resource development. After observing the capability and innovativeness of the Fellows of the Academy, H E Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, President of India commented that the Academy is a celebration of the core competents of rural families. Mission 2007 is committed to a cause of total literacy in our country and for alleviating hardship to our hard working farm women and men caused by meteorological and marketing factors. I am grateful to Mr Senthilkumaran, Programme Director, Information Communication Technology and to his colleagues for taking the trouble to compile this directory. The earlier two versions of this directory were compiled under the guidance of Ms Geeta Sharma, Former Operations Manager and I wish to record our gratitude to her and to Mr Basheerahmad Shadrach for their significant contributions to the success of the Alliance. I hope the Village Knowledge Centre or Gyan Chaupal movement will gather further momentum and will achieve its goal of ensuring the provision of a demand driven package of dynamic and generic information to children, women and men in our villages at the right time and place.
