The objectiveoftheFASTCoursesistohelpstudentsacquirethecommunicationskills necessarytodealwiththemostcommonsocialanddailylifesituationstheywill encounterduringtheiroverseasassignments. Languageformsadequatetosatisfy personalneeds,"how-to"information,andculturalhighlightsarepresentedina formatthatwillencouragestudentstotryoutandusewithconfidencethe languageskillstheyhavedeveloped. TheoriginalversionoftheJapaneseFASTCoursewasdraftedin1981by TetsuoKumatoriyaandMariTakahashiunderthedirectionofMadelineE.Ehrman. Thesematerialswereeditedin1985byJohnB.Ratliff,III,andHedyA.St.Denis. Basedonobservationofstudentperformanceandcommentsofbothstudentsand instructorsatFSI,thecoursehasbeenextensivelyrevisedoverthepastseveralyears.
