Because of extensive changes and additions to the entries for some of the subjects of the book, those entries have been rewritten here. In addition, as a result of information supplied by Willie Kate Barham Underwood, entries have been added for subjects 516 through 559, the descendants of William Bernard Underwood; and because of information supplied by Brenda Walker (a descendant of William Manning Underwood through his son, Samuel Henry Underwood), entries have been added for subjects 600 through 661. These additions are listed in the order of the subject number, which may not follow numerically from the preceding subject. For example, subject 600, Samuel Henry Underwood, does not follow the entry for his father 506, Henry Manning Underwood (as would normally be the case). Sorry about that. 00A Joseph Underwood of Dorchester, England (son of ___); born circa 1560 in England, and had at least two children: a. John (See 00B) b. Joseph (See 00D) 00B John Underwood of London Middlesex England, born in 1585 in England (son of Joseph 00A); married April 25, 1607 Rachel Edwards, born in 1585 in London, Middlesex England, (daughter of -----Edwards), and had at least three children: a. There were no children of this marriage. 00D Joseph Underwood of_____, born circa 1586 (son of Joseph 00A); married _______, and had at least two children: a. Thomas (see 00E) b. Joseph -- Nothing is known of him except a mention in his brother's Will. Joseph Underwood may not have come to this country, since there is no record of him. Probably his son, Thomas came without him. 00E Thomas Underwood of Dorchester, Massachusetts, born _____ (son of Joseph 00D). There is no record of his marriage , and he died without heirs according to his Will. 001 Thomas Underwood of Anne Arundel County Maryland, born 1620 in England, (son of John 00A); married in 1656, Elizabeth Meeres,in New castle, Delaware, (daughter of Thomas Meeres); and had two children: a. Samuel, born 1656 ( See 002). b. Elizabeth, born circa 1662 (may have married William Cockey) 002 Samuel Underwood New Castle County, Delaware, born 1656 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland (son of Thomas 001); married in 1681, Mary Wilcox and had six children: a. Samuel, born 1682 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. b. Joseph, born 1684 in Anne Arundel, County, Maryland. c. Benjamin, born 1686 in New Castle, Delaware. d. Alexander, born 1688 (See 003). e. Thomas, born 1690. f. Elizabeth, born circa 1692. 008 Samuel Underwood of Franklin County, Virginia, born February 6, 1791 in Orange County, North Carolina (son of Samuel Underwood 007); married circa 1810 Docia 1 __________, and had about thirteen children: a. Samuel, born September 11, 1813 (see 009). b. Mary, born December 2, 1815. c. A son born circa 1816. d. Elizabeth, born December 29, 1817. e. Jane, born circa 1818. f. John, born December 5, 1819 (also see 507 in Part VII); married in 1838, Jane Prater. John Underwood died in 1861 at the age of 43, and Jane died some time after 1870 at more than 87 years of age. g. James, born December 14, 1821. h. Noah, born May 20, 1820. i. Henry Manning (see 506). j. A son, born circa 1830. k. Docia, born September 11, 1830; married July 12, 1856, John Whorley, son of Sam and Mary Whorley. l Hester, born January 2, 1833. m. A son, born circa 1835. He apparently died before 1850 since he is not shown in that census. n. Martha, born, circa 1837. o. Martin A., born May 25, 1837; married April 2, 1856, Elizabeth Foster, daughter of Gabriel and Mary Foster. Elizabeth died and then Martin married on December 26, 1879, Mella Smith, daughter of George and Mary Smith. p. Noah B., born May 20, 1828 (see 508 in Part VII). This may be the same as (j.) above. It appears from the census records that Samuel's first wife may have died circa 1837, and that he married Docia between 1850 and 1860, and had no children by the second marriage. It is also possible that his first wife was in fact Docia, and that she was not listed in the census records for some unknown reason. Note that one daughter, born in 1830, is named Docia. Their son John's death record states that he was the son of Sam and Docia Underwood. John was born in 1819. Samuel Underwood is shown in the 1860 Franklin County census as being 69 years of age, and his wife, Docia, is shown as 67 years old. That census also shows two unmarried daughters, Jane (48) and Hester (28) living with them. Samuel (80), Docia (78) and Hester (36) are listed in the 1870 Franklin County census. Samuel is shown in the 1880 census of Floyd County, Virginia as being 90 years old and living with James T. Hollon (Hollins) and wife Caroline Hollins (29). Samuel is listed as Hollins' father-in law. James T Hollins married Artery Underwood in December 1835. We assume that Artery was Samuel's daughter, and that Caroline was the daughter of James and Artery, and thus Samuel's granddaughter. 009 Samuel Underwood of Patrick County, Virginia, born September 11, 1813 in Franklin County Virginia (son of Samuel 008); married in September, 1833, Rebecca Hollins, daughter of John Hollins, and had eleven children: a Isaac W. Underwood (see 021 in Part III; and all of Part III, which is an abridged copy of his journal, “The Life and Times of Isaac W. Underwood”, as written by himself). b. William Riley (see 016). c. Alfred (see 017). d. Mary (Dolly), born in 1842 (?). She was never married. She is shown in the 1860 census as being eighteen years of age; in the 1870 census as being twenty-eight years of age, and in the 1880 census as being thirty-two. She died January 1, 1889 (her age was given as thirty- five, but she must have been about forty-seven). She had been nursing Moses Hilton who was sick with typhoid fever, when she contracted the disease and died from it. e. Malinda, born 1884. We can find no record of her marriage. She is last seen in the 1970 census as being twenty-six years of age. f. Noah (see 020) g. Catherine, born in 1858, married on September 22, 1870, John F. Finney. John Finney was the brother of Mary Lurinda Finney, the wife of Isaac W. Underwood. h. Martha, born in 1850, married on January 18, 1870, Samuel Gerald (or Jarrel), son of Joseph and Eliza Gerald. We have no information regarding children, if any. i. J. Henry, born June 1, 1853; married on January 12, 1875, S. F. Pendleton, a widow, daughter of William Bryant. Henry is last shown in the 1870 census of Patrick County as seventeen years of age, five years prior to his marriage. Henry died shortly after he married, and we know of no children. j. Ellender, born in 1856; married on July 27, 1874, D. Gerald, son of Joseph and Eliza Gerald. D. Gerald is the brother of Samuel Gerald, who married Ellender's sister, Martha. k. Elizabeth (see 009A) (The remainder of this entry is correct as shown in the book) 009A Elizabeth Underwood of Patrick County, Virginia, born on March 21, 1858 (daughter of Samuel 009); married on June 14, 1888, Shadrack McAlexander, son of John William and Susannah McAlexander, and had eight children: a. Charles W. P. Underwood (see 009B)2 . b. Albertie C. , born in 18853. c. Becky L. , born on June 25, 1888 (or 1889). d. Netty May, born on April 15, 1889; died January 10, 1970. e. Susan A. , born in 1890. f. Mildred (Milly) M., born on April 15, 1891. g. Samuel Shade, Sr. (see 009C). h. Sarah M. L., born on August 6, 1895. Shadrack McAlexander4 was known as Shade or Shady. He was the twin brother of Mishack (see 005 in the book). He died in 1942 and is buried in Lee Cemetery located at Tuggles Gap along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd County, Virginia. Strangely, Elizabeth is listed in the 1910 census of Patrick County, Virginia, with a daughter Marnie, age 20, son, Samuel, age 18 and a daughter, Sallie, age 14. She is listed as Elizabeth Underwood. 009B Charles W. P. Underwood of Davy, West Virginia, born circa 1876 in Patrick County, Virginia (son of Elizabeth Underwood 009A); married on August 29, 1901, _____ Hall, daughter of Joseph Hall, and had one child, Mr. C. A. Underwood of Marytown, West Virginia, who also has one child, a daughter named Judy. The above information was obtained from an old newspaper clipping showing a photograph of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. P. Underwood celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. 009C Samuel Shade McAlexander, Sr. of Patrick County, Virginia, born on August 21, 1892 in Patrick County, Virginia (son of Elizabeth Underwood 009A); married circa 1913, Della Ester Cockram, born September 28, 1895, and had three children: a. Samuel Henry, Jr. (see 009D). b. Nannie M. c. Leona. Samuel Shade McAlexander died on November 26, 1967. His wife and son died in a fire in Floyd County on January 18, 1981. 009D Samuel Henry McAlexander, Jr., born on June 22, 1914, in Patrick County, Virginia (son of Samuel Shade McAlexander 009C); married circa 1934, Okra Florence Ingram, born on February 7, 1916, and had two children: a. Calvin (see 009E). b. Coy Malvin, born on April 23, 1936. Samuel Henry McAlexander died in a fire on January 18, 1981. 009E Calvin McAlexander of Patrick County, Virginia, born on April 14, 1935 (son of Samuel Henry (009D); married circa 1957, Frankie Viola Clark, born on July 13, 1939, and had two children: a. Frankie Gail (see 009F). b. Calvin Junior see 009G). Calvin's first wife left him and he later married Mary Jane Horton, born on August 8, 1953, and had one child: c. Timothy Calvin, born on October 10, 1977. Calvin's second wife left him, and she later had a child by another man; a girl born in January, 1986. Calvin gained custody of his youngest son who now lives with him in Stuart, Virginia. 009F Frankie Gail McAlexander, born on September 15, 1958 in Patrick County, Virginia (daughter of Calvin 009E); married on ______, Timothy William Alwood, born on May 4, 1952. There are no children of this marriage. 009G Calvin Junior McAlexander, born on January 26, 1961 in Patrick County, Virginia (son of Calvin 009E); married on ___, Laurie Witt, born on September 13, 1962 (?), and had two children: a. Josh Allen, born on May 31, 1983. b. Shannon Marie, born on October 1, 1985. 010A Jesse Underwood of Putnam County, Indiana, born on March 22, 1794 in Floyd County, Virginia (son of Joseph 010); married on December 23, 1817, Nancy Manning, born on December 11, 1792 in Franklin County, Virginia, daughter of Davis Manning, and had seven children: a. Catherine (see 010B). b. Celia; married on December 26, 1844, James Kennedy (Cannaday ?), and had three children: (1). Joseph. (2). Thomas. (3). Delilah. c. Davis, born circa 1832. d. James Preston, born circa 1823; married on June 3, 1847, Jane Miller, and had two childrern: (1). Jane E., born in 1848. (2). Jesse, born in 1849. e. Jane (see 010C). f. Lucy; married ___ Daniels. g. Joseph Franklin, born in 1821 in Kentucky; married on September 19, 1848, Lucretia Harris. 010B Catherine Underwood of Putnam County, Indiana (daughter of Jesse 010A); married on February 10, 1842 by the Reverend Anderson Dodd in Putnam County, William A. Stultz, born in North Carolina, son of Philip and Catherine Ketner Stultz. We have Pedigree Charts supplied by Mrs. Don R. (Phyllis Davis) Moore of Rt. 3, Box 19, Delphi, Indiana 46923, but they are poor copies and only partly legible. The charts carry this line down to present day persons, but we will put off trying to decipher them for now. 015 William Underwood of Franklin County, Virginia, born January 5, 1785 in Franklin County, Virginia (son of Samuel 006); married on about March 18, 1808, Sealey Manning, daughter of Davis Manning, and had (at least) five children: a. William B. Underwood (see 515) b. _________, a son, born between 1815 and 1820. c. _________, a son, born between 1815 and 1820. d. Joshua Underwood, born circa 1822; married in 1843, Mary Underwood, daughter Joseph Underwood (a cousin), and had at least seven children: (1) Harriet Emiline, born in 1846. (2) Sophia C., born in 1848. (3) Andrew J., born in 1851. (4) Wanda A., born in 1854. (5) John E., born in 1856. (6) Mary E., born in 1858. (7) Eliza E., born April 1, 1860. e. ________, a son, born between 1825 and 1830. f. Creed Underwood, born circa 1815. The names of the other children of William Underwood are not known, and the last named above is questionable. William Underwood is listed in the 1810, 1830, and 1840 census reports for Franklin County, Virginia; and in the 1850 census of Floyd County, Virginia, where his occupation is listed as Shoemaker. His wife, Sealey (or Celia) is shown with him in the Floyd County census; but a Celia Underwood is listed in the Franklin County census of the same year, with the oldest son, William B. Underwood, and her age is given as eighty. Celia Underwood is listen on the line just above the entry for William B. and Rachael Underwood in the 1860 census of Franklin County. She is listed as a Pauper, eighty-five years of age. We suppose it was possible that she was living with her husband when the Floyd census was taken, then living with her son when the Franklin census was taken. The discrepancies in age are not uncommon in census records, especially for older people. William Underwood died of Dropsy (heart failure)June 16, 1859. He is listed in the death records as being 74 yrs., 5mos., 11 days old at his death. We computed his birth date based on this information. The marriage bond for William Underwood and Sealey Manning is on file in the Franklin County Courthouse in Rocky Mount, Virginia. Recorded with the bond is a note written by Sealey's father, Davis Manning: Sir you will plese to grant lisens to mr William Underwood to be marrege my dougter Selly Mannen as I give my consent as she is of age. Given under my hand and seal this 17 of March 1808. Test: Davis Mannen Payton Ellyson Sealey Mannen 015A William B. Underwood born circa 1815 in Franklin County, Virginia (son of William Underwood 015); married5 in 1837, Rachael Allen, and had at least nine children: a. Celia Ann, born in 1840; married on February 20, 1855, William James (24), son of Nancy James. Celia Ann Underwood is shown in the family of William and Rachael Underwood in the 1850 census, but the age is given as 80. This may have been William's mother, Sealey Manning Underwood. b. William, Jr., born in 1841. He is believed to have died in the Civil War, since there is no record of his marriage, and he is not shown in the census records after 1860 (he was 20 years old in 1861). c. Sarah E., born in 1842; married on December 26, 1864, William E. Trail (17), son of William and M. Trail. d. Susan, born in 1852; married on July 30, 1874, S. P. Balton (22), daughter of John, Jr. and F. Balton. i. George Washington Under-wood (see 015B). William B. Underwood died on September 16, 1861, at the age of forty-four. A story, handed down through the generations, states that he died within a half mile of his home on his return from fighting in the Civil War. Rachael Underwood is shown in the 1880 census of Floyd County, Virginia, living with her daughter, Sarah Trail. 015B George Washington Underwood of Floyd County, Virginia, born on May 23, 1860 in Franklin County, Virginia (son of William B. Underwood 015A, and Rachael Allen); married on December 17, 1881, Martha Ellen Frances Willis, born October 18, 1866 (15 years old), daughter of Robert Lee Willis and Sarah Kay Helm, and had twelve children: a. William Bernard Underwood (see 516). b. Grover Cleveland Underwood (see 560). c. Archibald Ray Underwood, born on May 11, 1885; married Roxie Poff. d. Cassie Tilton Underwood (see 536). e. Frank Herman Underwood, born on March 8, 1900; died January 8, 1964. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Roanoke, Virginia. f. Epsie Underwood (see 535) g. John P. Son, died as infant. George Washington Underwood is shown in the 1890, 1900 and 1910 census for Floyd County, Virginia. These census reports contain many errors, but Mrs. Willie Kate Underwood (see 553) set us straight on many of these.
