This standard deals with ball screws used on machine tools and is being issued in the following parts: Ball Screws— Part 1 Vocabulary and designation Part 2 Nominal diameters and nominal leads — Metric series Part 3 Acceptance conditions and acceptance tests Part 4 Ball screw axial rigidity Part 5 Distribution of static and dynamic loads and operational life At the moment only standards on Parts 1, 2 and 3 are being issued whereas standards in regard to Parts 4 and 5 will be issued as soon as the work on them is completed at the International level. The text of the ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is particularly drawn to the following: a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’: b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker. In the adopted standard, reference appears to one International Standard for which Indian Standard also exists. The corresponding Indian Standard which isto be substituted in its place is listed along with its degree of equivalence for th e edition indicated. This part of ISO 3408 specifies the nominal diameters and nominal leads, metric series, for ball screws. It also gives preferred combinations of nominal diameter and nominal lead 5 Nominal leads and a general plan which includes additional combinations to be used when it becomes necessary to deviate from the pre- ferred combinations. The following series of nominal leads, in millimetres, shall be used: 2 Normative reference 1–2–2,5–3–4–5–6– 8–10–12–?6– 20 – 25 – 32 and 40.
