I'HEFAVE. Thepresentseems a fitting ojtportunity toprepare a brief resumeofthe historyofthisidea ofprinting the gestures of the Indinns'Si^n Lan^un^e i7h suchorder that Indians who know the si^ns nii^ht heeome readers of si^ns, and in the hope, ifreaders, the si>ins eould he utilized as a meansof educating the adult elass in anymatter that eould be explained in their sign language. Havinglired nearlyall m'flife inrontaet with Indians, I hare noticed theirliahit of gesturing in their coniniunications between themselves, and when talking towhites; butit did notoccurto me thattheirgestures meant anymorethantfwseofsome ivhitc men u'ho throw their arms about like the sailsofa crazy oldwind mill n-ithout thought ofmethod, or of conveying any idea whatever. Jiut, when theSmit/isonian InstitutionaskedeolleetorsofIndian matters to take notice of signs and make it a /lart of their work, I began to believetheremightbe.something init, and whenin 1880 theBureauofEth- nologyissued itsvolnm.inoa^reportonthis, andother matters. I becamefully interested anddetermined toilrop thecollertionof Indian uu>rds and devote myselfto theinvestigationof the gestures called Sign Talk. Skipping theyears of di/ficuity incipient to many new investigations, I came to the point wheref saw I must abandontheruleslaiddownforguid- anceinrepresentingsignsasbtin^needlessly burdensome, and anotherftlan occurring to my mind which ]tvomised better results, I adopted the idea generallyobserved inthis work. AllImlian gestureshave someessentialposition, and my effort has been to learnthatpositionand tomakea diagram ofit, showing mtwement by a dotted line to orfrom thatessential position. 1 also usually represented the positionas seenwhilemaking thesigns withmy own hands. The resultwasa diagram soplain, thattheIndian himselfcould readit as soonashe learned the meofthedotted linesluxving the movement. When J realized that, T redoubled my efforts, believing they could be utilized as a means of enlightenment to all sign talk- ing tribes, especially to .inch as had passed .schoolage. How well my part of this work has been done, I leave for interestedparties todecide. I couldfill severalpages withinteresting matter concerning the .strugglefrom thispoint ofconceiving oftlie idea anditsaccomplishment; the years ofprivation be- forereceiving any assi-stantsefrontothers, butI forbear. ^JS=3^iSBiiiS^^^g&=i5t™¥j^tp5J^
