He qualified as a doctor in London, moving to Auckland, New Zealand in the late 1970s. Soon after starting in general practice, he started to practise and study acupuncture. Impressed by the safety and effectiveness of this ancient Chinese healing art, he studied its roots in traditional Chinese medicine. He became president of the New Zealand Medical Acupuncture Society, and by the early 90s had established a full time practice in Medical Acupuncture on Auckland’s North Shore. Since this time, Robin’s practice has broadened to focus on the concept of deep healing, and the drawing up of individualized healing plans. He runs MindBody Healing workshops in New Zealand and overseas for the sufferers of chronic illness, health professionals, and the general public. The Human Antenna is Robin’s second book, and explores his interest in the science of consciousness, and the role intuition plays in our lives. He draws from his everyday experiences, explaining these exciting but sometimes bewildering concepts in a simple and entertaining way. Robin is also a passionate musician and singer-songwriter, currently recording his third CD. His previous albums Black Ice (1998), and Silk and Knives (2002), have been featured on local and national radio stations, and he has performed live on national television. He has recently written The Human Antenna a stage musical, Chakramor, a celebration of the growth of human consciousness. Robin works from home with his wife, Trish, a registered nurse and midwife. They have three children, a lively Cavoodle puppy, and two beautiful but emotionally distant cats. When not working, he can be found pottering around either his garden or the golf course. His overriding ambition is to be the last person on earth to own a mobile phone. In particular, to my eldest daughter Sophie, who graciously allowed me to convert her orange bedroom into my writing retreat. And to Gabrielle Graham, who together with the staff of the Student Health and Counseling Center at Albany’s Massey University, unselfishly allowed me to cut back on my duties during the winter of 2005. Throughout the book, I mention many friends and colleagues who have guided me in my life and work. It is heartening to experience at first hand the support now in place for all doctors who are compelled to extend the boundaries of healthcare, and to embrace new paradigms of healing. I owe special thanks to Miriam and Gerald Gibb, and Julie and Tim Ewer, who continue to inspire me with their wisdom and cheerful encouragement. I am also grateful to Dawson Church and Courtney Arnold at Energy Psychology Press. I am fortunate indeed to have found you all. Special thanks also to artist Karla Vink who has converted my rough sketches into such clear and satisfying images, and to cover designer Victoria Valentine for her stunning work. I am also grateful for the unending patience and literary skills of my editors, Graeme Beals and Paula Reid, who have helped make writing The Human Antenna such a happy and fulfilling experience.
